Question Newbie needs some help

When it comes to car audio, I know absolutely nothing, so I really would appreciate some help. I've been searching through the forum for some tips, but figured I'd just come out and ask. The stock Bose in my CL-s sucks....my "friend" jumped in my car and cranked up the volume real quick and blew/tore/whatever my rear speakers, the 6x9's.....so now when there's some bass in my songs and the volume is anything over 25% up, sometimes it'll sound like there's a piece of paper vibrating on my speakers. Well its pretty annoying, so I wanna do something quick to remedy this. Funds are a little tight, so I can only spare around $500, and was just wondering if you guys could suggest some sorta setup I could go for

I listen to mostly hiphop....so I guess something that'll give good bass, and be able to be played loud. Like I said, I have no clue in this department, so any help would be great......thanks

wish i had a mark levison in my acura

I'm not sure that we have a lot of Acura folks here but my guess is your just looking for brand recommendations?

Focal, Boston Acoustics, ADS are all good speaker manufacturers.
I don't know your sizes so I can't really call if you are going to make the $500 budget

The blown speaker should be covered under warranty.
Your cost $0

I dont know about Acuras, I have an RX. But I just replaced my 4 door speakers (2 6 1/2", 2 8") with Boston Acustics. They run about 150 a pair. (without installation) I would highly reccomend them. I got mine at Tweeter, not sure if you have a tweeter store where you are located.

The "vibrating paper" sound you're hearing is the speaker cone, which is probably paper or some thin polymer. What happens is that the cone tears loose from the rubber ring around the edge. This is a "blown" speaker.

Speakers have a maximum "peak" and "continuous" wattage they can handle. If a speaker's peak rating is 200 watts, that doesn't mean you can play it that high all the time, but that it can handle a brief spike at that range.

An amp will have a wattage rating that is divided over multiple channels. A channel will usually be a pair of speakers, such as your front pair of mid-range and/or tweeters, and a second channel of rear. A third channel dedicated to a sub is not uncommon.

If the amp has 1000 watts divided over 2 channels, it's usually an even division (500Wx2) but might not be. Check the specs. 500 watts on a pair of front speakers means you can get speakers that are rated for 250 watts or so, because you have 2 speakers on that 500 watt channel.

You want to get a stronger amp than the speakers are rated for, and never have the volume at max. That way you get the best performance, because a 1000W amp driving 500W speakers is always going to sound better than a 500W amp driving 500W speakers. You don't want to be straining the amp's limits. Sound quality goes down when you do that. (Edit: it also makes the amp overheat, which is generally not good!)

For rap and hip-hop, you'll want a system with a strong low-frequency response, probably down to 25-30Hz. If you want lots of "bump" and you don't care too much about sound precision, 10" or 12" subs will give you that. 8" subs will have more punch and better sound fidelity if you're more into the 1812 Overture.

If you can't afford a good sub, don't get cheap ones. Instead replace your rear factory speakers with some woofers that do something like 40Hz+ Don't worry about the upper range with those. Upper range is what tweeters are for.

At $500 you can't do much. For now I would invest in some good rear speakers to replace the blown ones. Buy something that can handle the high wattage you plan to add, and save up for the future. You can't really go wrong with Infinity or MB Quart.

(somebody correct me if I'm talking out of my ***)

If you're looking for best sound possible, nadda worry about rearfill. ~$500 you can get pair of Oz Matrix and an Autotek/Hifonics/JBL/Cadence amp that would sound great up front. You have a violently large selection, especially if you're willing to use raw drivers.
I would just get a sub later as I would never run a quality aftermarket sub with stock speakers. If you absolutely need a sub now, get a full system:
-Crystal CpE60's: http://www.sounddomain.com/sku/CRYCPE60
-Adire Shiva: http://www.ampmanaudio.com/products/details.asp?id=550
-Autotek S 400.4: http://www.mmxpress.com/autotek/autotek_amplifiers.html
