Does anyone know where to get a subwoofer for my 1990 LS-400? The Dealer wants an arm and a leg so I'm looking for a cheaper way of getting it. Any ideas?
Did you take yours out of the car? It has a special bracket built into the speaker and glued together. The dealer told me it was 7" but what do they know! Also talked to a few sound guys who said they tried replacing one and since it has a special amplifier they couldn't match impedance or wattage or something like that. Made me want to be very skeptical. If you find one that works, please let me know.
.....if you have the Nak stereo, it's a 10" 4 ohm woofer, but the standard and "premium" stereos are 8" and 2 ohms. Pioneer and Kicker make "free-air" subs that would fit into the frame but you need to do some cutting and there is a OEM replacement woof for sale right now on that well-known auction site (rhymes with "D-day").
I agree the dealer prices are obscene- how much did they want for a new one? You'd save money going elsewhere even if you had to buy a new amp to match the standard 4-ohm impedance. Any competent stereo shop should be able to figure out a configuration that would work.

I just replace my the 8" Sub in my LS400 with the JL Audio 8IB4 Free Air Sub. Bought it at a local store for $105. I broke off the top of the bracket that the factory sub came in, put the JL in the bottom part of the bracket and it mounted perfectly. Still not much bass coming out of this small sub however.
