Is it worth of removing the speaker box in the LS400 front door?
In my 1996 LS4, I put a dynaudio MW160 speaker in the front door oem place. The speaker is in the factory door plastic box. The speaker box is very small and the speaker occupies almost all of the box.
Has anyone cut the back cover of the box and got an increase in the SQ for low frequency?
I am hesitate to cut the back cover off since it would be difficult to put the cover back if it doesn't work.
thanks

You should throw that box out and make your own bracket out of mdf. IMHO the MW160 is an amazing speaker but you are not even able to hear a 1/3 of its true performance due to where it is installed. The ideal installation would be to sound deaden your door and install the mw160 to a bracket made out of mdf. Your clarity and speaker response should sound beautiful.

yep. what Spyder78 said. I'd add keep in mind the depth of speaker itself, you dont want the doorpanel pressing on that mw160. Important to make a correct MDF adapter, dont want glass/tint scratched or cone/woofer damaged.
Those mw160 sure are sweet....i'll keep an eye out for them, while i enjoy my k2p's..

Work in progress.
I remove the whole plastic box of the front door out. Made an 1/2 inch baffle, two 3/4 inch rings. The three add up too thick, and the MW160 touch the door panel.
The 1/2 inch baffle plus one 3/4 inch ring are to thin, and the speaker touch the door glass.
Will make a 3/4 inch baffle, and see how it works with a 3/4 inch ring.

Tried it, and the two 3/4 inch (baffle and ring) fit well, the speaker does not touch the window glass nor the door panel.

All of the OEM audio was replaced.
HU: CDA 9887
Front: MD102 tweeters, MW160 woofers
No rear fill.
Subwoofer: JL 8IB4.
Two alpine 3555 amps. run active. The tweeter gets 50 w rms each. The woofers and subwoofers get 150w rms each (bridged).
The vinyl that cover the big hole on the door was replaced by a piece of aluminum flashing, patched with dynamat.
Removing the speaker oem plastic box let the woofer open up and bring out all of the speaker potential. The are some rattles and more sound deadening is needed. This (removing the speaker box and vinyl) is the biggest improvement in SQ.
