modifications needed to install 6.5" rear speakers?
okay, so i was reading throughout the forum, and it seems that what im gathering is mixed information. some people are saying its a direct drop, and some are saying that a little modification would be needed.
i have an sc300 and about to get some 6.5" jl audio speakers. i already installed some 6.5" jl audio component speakers in the fronts with the adapter piece sold on ebay, and that fit just fine. a little tight fit, but its in there and sounds beautiful! now i just need to upgrade the rears from the stock 4" to the 6.5" ones.
so yea..back to topic...what modifications would need to be done? would i need to cut slits in the rear speakers area so i can create a bigger hole to fit those in there flush? does anyone have a picture of their setup in the rear?
i cut the sides of existing holes with grinder ( i don't think you have to do it 'cuz you want to go with 6.5, 6x9's are oval so i needed little more room on the sides), but worst part was to attach the speakers to the rear deck. So what i did, i used some 1/2 inch plywood, cut a square, a little bigger than a speaker (one for each speaker) and i cut a hole for a speaker inside that plywood, placed that plywood under panel/carpet, screwed it from the inside of the trunk thru metal deck so they in place and than screw the speakers to that plywood from top.
6.5''s will fit in the existing holes in the rear deck BUT you will need to create your own baffle board or mount as they won't fit in the original mounts. Easiest way is to get particle board and a saw to make your own custom one.
i found 5.25 to fit directly in the metal holes, no modification needed, perhaps just a little dynamat to seal them up. but that's just my personal experience.
