Looking for a sub amp for my velodyne.

I think they're awesome. I've got 2 PDX amps in my trunk and they're so tiny that they fit where the old stock CD changer used to sit. The footprint of the amp is smaller than an 8.5 x 11" piece of paper! They're also incredibly efficient, so they go easy on the alternator.

I have a PDX 4.150 running my front stage which consists of some ScanSpeak revelators and Seas Neo aluminum tweets actively, and a PDX 1.600 running my IDQ 12" sub in the trunk.

Both amps were birthsheeted making atleast 15% more power than they are rated for. (My 1.600 was birthsheeted at 720 something WRMS).

Some people do not like class D amps, but I think they sound great.

I'm only going to be using it for a sub amp. Think it has enough "kick"? Only need about 300 watts for the Velodyne.

I'll be using McIntosh amps for the mids and highs.

Definitely, but note that I am of the school of thought that given the same distortion ratings, and reasonable build quality, power is power. The PDX 1.600 will have plenty of kick for you and come in a great package. I'm out of town right now so I'm not with my car, but I'll post apicture of how I have the PDX mounted in my trunk.. you'll see how tiny these things really are.

I have an Alpine PDX-1.600 powering 2 10" Boston Acoustics in my Nissan Titan. Amp works great and hits hard.

I can understand why some don't like class D, especially when they came out commercially in the early 90s. But, it's been over 15 years, so I'm interested in how the technology has matured.

Suneet-pics would be greatly appreciated.

Now for those that don't like class D...any reason why and what I should look out for? I'm a class A/B guy with the Mc amps, but I figure I'd try something new for the sub.

Just thought I would add my subs are running 400 watt RMS and this amp is claimed to run 600 RMS.

Here's a picture of my combo:

Space considerations. I want to be able to use my trunk and need the almost the full amount for hauling optics and astro gear. I'd keep the 4000M in there, but as you know, it's a BIG amp. Also thought of the MC431 single channel 300 watter, but wanted to know if there was something that was smaller with the same wattage. It's only for the sub, and the book for velodyne says 300 watts recommended.

Not going "too" cheap. Currently modding the xdp4000x processor. Waiting for digikey to ship the parts.

Those Alpine PDX amps are nice, especially for the sub. I was at a recent car audio meet and a gentlemen had 3 of them stacked on top of each other. It took up less space than a normal 1.0 cubic feet box. I liked it more than the Brax x2400 amp I had.

It is good quality stuff and I've never had it overheat even when I listen to rap with the subs all the way up and the bass on max. It's a great little amp and I would recommend it. Also www.onlinecarstereo.com had it for $319 + free shipping when I got mine. Just FYI...
