Default advice about replacement keys?

I just got my 1997 SC400 !

However, the car only came with one (master) key. I phoned the local Lexus dealer about getting another key or two made as spares; they told me it would cost approximately $250 each key (including the key itself and the cutting costs).

Is this normal, or is there an equivalent cheaper route? I see key blanks on eBay for this car ranging between $10 and $60.

Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

I'd assume the Lexus dealer key is so expensive because (aside from it being a dealership) they have the built-in remote that they'd have to program.

I was told by my dealer that they run ~$100 each. I was told that they are laser cut at Toyota Japan from your VIN#. They are expensive; that's for sure. But, $250 seems a bit high.

Keys arrived today from LEXUS-PARTS.COM, and work perfectly. I highly recommend this source!

Thanks for the info.

I received 2 keys with the car. One with the remote and one "hardware" brand as a spare.

I have no problem paying a fair amount, and I'd like to have a quality back up.
