12 gauge speaker wire too big?

can i use 12 guage for the front and rear speakers or it that to big?
should i go for 14 guage?

It's only too big if you have very little power running, or if you can't run the wires into the doors.

But it is overkill.

I have 12g for my front (150W/ch), 16g for rear (25w/ch) and 12g for sub (250w).

if you got it and you have room to run them..Use them...nothing wrong with a little overkill..

I looked at alternatives a number of years ago (law of physics haven't changed) and the problem is "skin effect" at higher audio frequencies. A cost-effective solution, if it fits in your application, is PC ribbon cable; using maybe 12 conductors (6+, 6-). Thicker single conductors only increase loss ratio between low frequencies and high frequencies.

Good point. Which is why speaker wires are bundles of small strands and not single core wires.
