Default Soundsystems anyone? (2GS)

Hey all, Im 17 and I drive a '99 GS300, hah thats a little introduction because this is my first post.

But anyways, the stock Bose system is nice and all, and it can get loud as ever, but the bass isint really that great, so im thinking about getting a system, any suggestions?

I was thinking that, sence theres a big space behind the backseat, and just one speaker in there, i can get the subs put in there... I dont wanna loose much, if any, trunkspace, if possible.

And I would like enough Bass, so if i wanted to, I could get it loud enough for people near by to feel it, but not have to turn up my speakers all the way... lol I hope that made sense.

Ill post a picture of the place im thinking about later, and im posting it here because its more about layout than anything.

Welcome! What the previous poster was saying is that the OEM stereo in your year GS is either Pioneer (called 'premium', the base stereo) or Nakamichi (the upgrade).

Since you're really focused on addiing bass, what you probably want to look for is a quality line level converter (use the search feature) and an amp / subs in the trunk, just keeping the OEM headunit and speakers for now.

heh, ive never even heard of a line level converter.

What exactly do they do? I want a nicer system all together, with everything nice, clear, and loud, but I also want some extra bass.

welcome to CL

a line level converter turns the already slightly amplified sub signal into a lower level (voltage and such) RCA signal

so it acts as a bridge between the wires you cut off at the stock subwoofer to the new subwoofer's amplifier that you are hooking up

there is a search function near the top of the page, feel free to use that to search on this topic, there are a bunch of threads on this subject in the Audio Video section of the forums

really depends on ur budget

the cheapest thing would be to get JL clean sweep and get a sub amp and subs

if you got the $$$, like ~ 2500$ you can plan on replacing your whole system, which is much better, but comes at a price and time invested

Replacing your system ( and thats the only way thats worth it ) would cost:

DIY/Ebay/Wholesale:

Battery ~ 170$
Wiring and Accessories ~ 150$
Headunit ~ 300$
Kit ~ 50$
Components front ~ 190 - 800$
Baffle Wood/Screw/DeflexPad/Deadening for front doors - 100$
Coaxial Rear ~ 75$
1 Subwoofer 12" - 100$-700$, if two - 200-1400$
1 Box - 50-400$
1 Subwoofer Amplifier - 200$-1000$ (depending on budget)
1 Component Amplifier - 150$-700$ (again on budget)
Dynamat Trunk - 50-200$

Thats pretty much what youd look to buy. You would install everything yourself, but a very experienced installer would take 6 hours on your job at least. If you add in dynamatting you could say another 4 more hours for doors and entire trunk. Usually you pay 70$ an hour @ shops. Adds up quickly.

Have fun if you decide to go all out. Never skip corners, a properly installed system is somthing that you will really enjoy for years.

Ive decided to not go the line level way, but to get a system, i can spend about 2500 (Max), and was wondering if this is good positioning.

The space im thinking about putting the speakers (let me know if this is good positioning.)
ALSO, there is already a sub there, a little to the left and under of where i wrote the size.

trunkspace. Once I go to college ill probably leave this car to my parents, who still want trunkspace to exist, so on the gs i only wanna take up that extra back compartment.

Input?

remove the subwoofer from rear deck

get a sealed dual 12" subwoofer box

get 2 Good quality 12" subwoofers, JL W6v2, RE SE, Diamond D6, Etc

get 1 ~ 1000 watt amp, like PG 1200.1, or JL 1000/1

JL Clean Sweep

Since it appears that you will have money to spend on the system, i'd suggest using Zapco amp(s). One of the best in the business and, depending on the type of Zapco amp you get, you could eliminate the JL clean sweep or Rockford Fosgate 3sixty to get a clean, clear, crisp sound from non OE speakers.

31w/12d/14t are the dimensions of the box that will fit in that space. i have 2 jl 12's w3. they don't sound as good as a ported box, but if you want to keep trunk space available then seal is the only way. you must remove stock sub.

Thanks, but why do they not sound as good as a ported box, and why do you have to go sealed?

ported=great bass=no trunk room. ported boxes always put out a longer bass wave than sealed, but the box will be twice as big. it's realy up to you, 2 twelves in a ported box will take up most of the trunk. the dimensions i posted are a perfect fit in that space between the wheel weals, leaving most of the trunk open for use and are the perfect air space required for 2 12's w3 jl.

What about amps to power the subs?... Also, does your system still thump pretty loud?

remove ur stock sub

get the sealed box, polyfill it

budget:

get 2 12" jl w2v3 (380)

get 1 jl 500/1 (350)

if you got money get:

2 12" jl w6v2 (700)

1 1000/1 (700)

itll be loud enough, sealed sounds better than ported in most applications, ported will give you more low end but if not made properly will sound very sloppy.
