Incredible but suspicious..
E - I've seen the same JL advertisement & sure, it's easily possible. The Metro isn't very large to begin with so U've already got a small pressure chamber. Ainsley Fukuda did 159+ with two RF Power DVC 15's with a Power 1100a2 on each sub ( in an S-10 extended cab P/U ) & that's w/o any tuning. For me, the biggest question is which meter did they measure the pressure on? Check out some of the various organizations "World Records" to see how much variance there is. My friend's at Ace Audio still use the gold standard B&K meter ( which I THINK only USAC uses ). It generally registers lower pressure that other mics; hence USAC SPL records tend to be lower than other organizations.
E - The monoblock amp's a great match with the 15W3 sub. The amp pushes 500 wrms & the sub's rated at 400 wrms ( but there's always some dynamic headroom built into the specs ). I guess it would depend on what your enclosure was like as to how close to 171 dB U could come. Be fun though!!
It's all about installation and environment. IF you take a VW Bug and put 10 layers of dynomat extreem into it, wall off the back seat and do a nice little port, you would get insane SPL.
E - That's exactly what high SPL "sounds" like. Pretty much anything over 145 dB is a "Brappp" sound. Read in this month's Auto Sound & Security that the editor compared it to a burp - close enough!!
Hey guys, long time no post. I am a JL fan, but there ad is a little misleading. Those W3s had an excursion somewhere in the neighborhood of 3''. I do not know who built the subs, but they are not stock. I would assume they're some sort of JL prototype or the shop modded them. Maybe the same technologies as the W7?

E - For SPL testing, usually the mic's 12" from the passenger side A-pillar; 4" above the dash & 1" from the windshield while facing it ( exact placement can be found in either the USAC or IASCA rulebooks, depending on which organization U compete in ). The one's I quoted R USAC mandated as USAC is where I compete the most. In Outlaw events I've seen them move the mic all around the cockpit to find the highest reading - believe sometimes they also allow raising/lowering of the windows as well ). Of course, in Port Wars the mic is stuck right down into the port of the enclosure!! For SQ testing, it's placed 26" above the driver's seat cushion & also facing the dash as in SPL testing.
Sirs - Yep, 3" of linear Xmax is right about where the W7's R supposed to move. Have ya had a chance to demo one yet? I've been busy with family things & haven't even been down to the local shop to check them out but I've got some vacation coming up in November & I hope to spend some quality time there then!

Those subs were 5 bone stock 15 w3's and 5 EQ D2's...And is by no means easy to break into the 170's. The measurement was on termlab euipment (B&K expect about 6-8 db less). And NO you will not reach this goal with a 500/1 on each sub...Put a 1000/1 on each coil and you have got a start.
The coolest thing about that car is they did not blow 1 sub even running double their RMS (even through deathmatch:eek: )

E - Don't have access to a JL spec sheet but it's a safe rule of thumb ( for an SPL woofer ) that it will easily handle twice it's RMS rating. RF Power HX2's handle 400 wrms but 1000 watts peak so U'd be safe with a JL 500.1 on each voice coil. I suppose that the W3 would live with the 1000.1 on each coil in short bursts as well but haven't done any serious SPL competing in a decade or so. Things have come a long way since then ( for the better ).
ITZLOUD,
Thanx for all the info. I had a question though. What kinda car do you have and what's in it stereo wise??
I have a 2000 GS400 and I'm plannin on getting 2 12" Kicker Solo-Baric L7's... (I already have one)
~What amp should I run to those to give me mid to high 140's??
~I might even like it to be in the 150's so that I can compete
but tone it down to 130-40's for daily driving.. can I do this?
~What do you suggest??
Thanx for your input and it's nice seein you on the boards!

and when I say compete.. I don't mean IASCA or USAC levels... I mean just local competitions at stereo shops near by...
