?????Navigation systems?????
I just bought my first lexus and I love it. Its a 1998 ls400. I love everything about it. The only thing I wish it had was a navigation system. In my old car I had one and it was very usefull. I had the Pioneer avic-505. This thing was nice but had a few problems, like taking a route longer than I know it should be.
Does anyone have opinions on navigation systems and whick one to choose? Im looking at alpine and theirs seem like its better. Also does anyone have pics of navigations and installs?

My navigation
gold98ls400,
I have alpine NVE-n851a installed in my car and it has the same problem like you have described - It would take longer routes than I know exist and are shorter and quicker. But most of the times it would select pretty good routes and you can always modify the them by setting waypoints or just drive the root you want and the system will recalculate everything in a matter of seconds. Otherwise it's pretty good - It's DVD based and they claim it works much, much faster then CD based units. It has gyro and speed sensor input so it can put you on the map even if you are in the tunnel.
Look at this thread for more information:

my system
gold98ls400,
$3000 is not a bad price for new alpine NVE-N851 + Monitor (TME-790) + install.
The retail prices are:
NVE-n851a- $2000
TME-790 - $1600
install - $250-400
I did my install myself, here is my expenses:
TME-790M bought on e-Bay - $999 +$30 S/H
NVE-n851a bought on e-Bay - $1050+$50 S/H
small parts + wiring + tools - $130
The monitor can make a big difference in price - TME-750 is about $450, cva-1005 is about $1200 and TME790 is about $1600 (ratail). So, know what you are getting whenever they give you a quote.
Best Regards

I did the install of the navigation system in my 98 malibu and it was easy because I used to do that type of work for a living. When I worked on a Lexus they always giving a problem with getting into the back seat.
I know I want the either the TME-M750 or the TME-M006S Alpine screens. But the only problem is i dont know if they are detachable like the pioneer.
Again you did a great job on your install

I cracked up when I saw your install .... I live about 2 miles from Broken Land Parkway in Columbia. Your install looks awesome. Are you driving an Rx300?
