Default 2001 GS 300 Subwoofer Replacement

All:

I have a 2001 GS 300 with the stock (not Mark Levinson) stereo package. The bass response is anemic at best, and I'd like to replace the subwoofer to improve it if at all possible. The kicker (no pun intended) is that in a perfect world, I'd just swap the old one out for a new unit with better bass.

Is this possible? I don't want to do anything more than disconnect the old one, unscrew it, and replace it with the new unit. Additionally, can anyone recommend a sub that works well and will line up with the same screw holes? Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Best Regards,

Michael Tschirret

there is a problem with direct swap

the rear dash that holds the stock sub is pretty thin and weak
ive heard of ppl saying it vibrates and not very good with a heavy sub

im going to toss in a bit more money to get a type-R 10" in a sealed box and put it in the trunk
maybe leave the stock sub in place, i dunno

heres my thread asking about sub upgrade for GS300 w/ stock sound system too

i replaced mine with a sony subwoofer (12" if my memory serves me right).
Yes, u need to find something to fit the stock mounting holes.
i got myself a 3/4 wood board and fit the subwoofer onto the board and then mount the board onto the stock mount holes.
since it was a DIY thing, so it does not have the professional look...but, the subwoofer is on the 'roof' of the trunk...so i care a bit less for the look.

Funny this subject comes up. I wouldn't recommend doing a direct swap. Your best bet is to get either an already made box, which is what I did but eventually going to get a custom box that covers that insert in the trunk. I was driving home from school today blasting my music and I start hearing car alarms going off around me, I'm like who the hell keeps hitting these cars not realizing I'm the idiot "hitting" those cars. I have a simple and what I think is a low powered setup. I'm running an Alpine M250 pushing about 350 watts to my 2 10" Alpine Type-E subs.

i don't think you can get much performance by swopping out your factory sub for an aftermaket sub. it may be a waste of money.

most people will replace their 10" sub and bypass the factory amp and run their own amp. 100% better bass response.

good luck finding a replacement sub that will match the factory holes.

the mark levinson subwoofer is 16 ohms so there is also no aftermarket match to impedence . i agree to go aftermarket sub amp and sub box.

lexusaudio,

didn't they use dual coils? double 8 ohm? Remember that one of the car models used dvc...

you're thinking aftermarket. Pretty sure that either the GS or the LS used DVC. It's in their schematic. that's for the ML system.
