For RX and GS, optimas are not a drop-in replacement. I bought the batteries with a pedestal (they will add roughly an inch to the height). Now the pedestals are supplied by Optima and one has to look for them near the display. I have heard of folks putting 2x4 or other stuff. I still had to put 4or 5 washers to make the orignal holdown to work. You can buy and cutt to length aluminum tube as well.

The other problem I faced was tha the posts on optimas as some what closer to the center and the terminal wires had tn be stretched to reach. This cuases stress on the post but it has been months and the post has not broken off

Last note .. GS orignal battery blanket gave me a hard time to break off. I do not know if es has it too.

I think most guys go with the D34/78 battery. I believe that's the one I have. Great looking battery.

not sure I'm understanding this right but if you left the pedestal off wouldn't it give more slack to work with on the wiring?

It would but then you wont be able too tighten down the hold down clamp to hold the battery. You can also get yourself a die and create more threads on the bolts.

I was planning on fabricating a new hold down clamp anyway since the stock one is for a square, flat battery and the optima is more like a six pack.

You might also be able to use an aluminum hold down bracket like the ones made for Honda/Acura. They're thicker.

here you go, 97 es. sorry the pic does not show the entire tie down. I'll take a better pic if you want.
I'm using both oem mounting points. it's made of stainless steel.
I removed the oem plastic bottom plate, b/c the battery terminals are a little thick.
