Default SC 300/400 woofer replacement

I was wondering if anybody has done this... also, what kind of woofer you guys used to replace it? I don't really want a box or anything because our trunks are already small as is.. Lastly, are you guys happy with it? Any comments are appreciated, thank you!

you can use a free-air 12" subwoofer and you can even wire up a small after market amp to power it..

Fred:

No, a 12 can't fit in the stock opening, only a 10. I am in the middle of replacing my Nakimichi 10" with a JL Audio IB4 10". The IB4 is a free-air sub but JL doesn't make it anymore. If you watch ebay and the CL member posts, you'll find someone selling it. Some small modifications are needed to mount it though as it is not a direct drop in. So far I have widened the deck-lid opening slightly and am now in the process of building a MDF baffle to allow the JL to sit higher on the deck-lid. Once you're able to clear the sub cage through the deck-lid opening you'll find that the JL will hit the gas tank. So, it need to be lifted. I have been taking pics of the work I've done so far and will post a DIY when I'm done. In the meantime, here are some pics of the project so far.

Here's the old Nak sub

The interior is out and access to rear speakers.

Nak in decklid

Cuts made to widen sub cutout.

How the JL sits without a baffle. See how it will not sink into cutout. Needs baffle to sit on.

The JL sub will need a seperate amp to run though. The JL is a 4 ohm speaker while the Nak is 6 ohms. The Nak amp wont put enough power to the JL for it to be utilized correctly. I'm just going to run a dedicated sub amp for the JL and keep the Nak amp to run all other speakers.

that's what i thought that only a 10 can fit in there. that was pretty much my question if the woofer can clear it because i opened it one day and noticed that the speaker was REALLY close to gas tank... so i didn't think an aftermarket speaker would fit w/out some kind of modification. once you're done with the DIY then i'll def check it out, thanks man!

Cool. I'll keep you posted. I think my biggest hurdle will be to get the stock grille to still fit on the deck-lid ok AND still look stock. That's the look I'm shooting for. Keep everything looking stock but upgrade everything to better quality.

Don't know offhand about Eclipse free-airs. I would start at their website and see if they make them. Next, check for mouting depth to see if it'll fit without the need for a baffle.

We have an 8" - 2ohm woofer that we use to replace the factory on ein the LS's. If they are trhe same between the LS and the SC, it may be good to go.

It would only work if you made a custom baffle to fill in the stock speaker cut-out. The SC comes with a 10" Nakimichi or Pioneer sub stock.

Exactly what components did you use, and what modifications were necessary for the installation? Speaker, amp, line converter, etc?

I used a Pioneer 10" freeair sub, it fits BUT it's very close to fouling with the fuel tank fuel gauge sender (I dunno if the US SC gets that but the JDM ones do with the digital matrix), I'm looking at replacing because I think I've blown it (it makes a weird whirring noise on bass hits).
