Default Need new master key

Hi,

My car came with only one master key. I can get a new master key from the dealer, but it is pretty pricey. Are there any other options. I really only need the key in case I lose the one I have.

As far as I know, a dealer is the only option. Maybe call up somewhere like Carson Toyota that is cheaper then most dealerships, and maybe they can hook you up.

I was quoted $300 or so for the master.

what year is your car? Mine doesn't have the button on the key to lock/unlock so it "only" costs about $50 to get a spare cut.

Mine is a 98. It has a key with a door control, alarm, etc. Someone also mentioned that there is some sort of chip that prevents the car from starting.

Thanks.

I found a local dealer that sells the "master" key for the same $190. That price includes the programming of the key to match the car. Apparently there is some box in the car that has a serial number and the key must have that serial number to start the car. Also, they need proof of ownership (registration, insurance) and the VIN before they well sell you the key. Then you have to take the car to have the key programmed.

Dontcha just love having a Lexus? Trust me man, I know how it is. I had to get a key myself a year or so ago. I walked into a neighborhood key making shop and got laughed out the door with my Lexus double-sided key. I then went to the dealer and was told to produce all those documents you listed, I thought they were just screwing with me at first. Now I'm glad they do it that way, too easy for a valet to try to copy your key. This way I KNOW they can't get a copy made in such a short amount of time
