Default Help me process . . .

First a couple of personal principles for context:

1. Buying a (especially new) car is just about the worst possible use of money.
2. The bonus depreciation capture on a 6,000+ GVWR vehicle used for business is a massive tax benefit. For example, I could buy an SUV or pickup truck on 12/31, use it entirely that day for business, and write off the ENTIRE value of the vehicle for that year, including tax, even if financed.
3. Sometimes you have to look at principle #1 and say screw it. =)

I'm a realtor and have been privileged to be able to use my now 10-year old F150 as my vehicle, despite focusing on the higher end and having very high net worth clients. No one seemed to mind that I drove a pickup, which I bought as my ranch truck. But alas, it's now just too old to keep getting away with that. But best vehicle I've ever owned. Bought new, 250K, no problems other than normal maintenance.

Test drove the Coupe earlier this year, but today test drove an IR/Caramel Convertible. Wow. This is not a car you buy on paper. It loses to its competitors from that angle. This is a car you buy for irrational, emotional reasons: a) its sheer beauty, b) that intoxicating exhaust note, and c) the gorgeous interior. Btw as many would concur, the infotainment system is an infuriating POS!

My short list:

1. F150 Limited
2. Range Rover Sport Autobiography
3. LC 500 Convertible

Problem is that I have a boat that occasionally needs to be towed, and that I live downtown in a big city. Hard enough having one car, let alone two. My hesitation on a new F150 Limited ($80K) is that while nice, not really nice enough. Hesitation on the RRS ATB is, well duh, it's a Land Rover product. Nuff said. But they have that British luxury, with serious power and growl. Problem with the Convertible is the loss of the huge tax deduction and that I'd need to keep my current truck (I think? Rent a truck to tow the boat?).

Thoughts???

We’ll, that’s a first - an F150 or an LC ‘vert. It would appear that you are…comfortable. Buy that LC for fun (the infotainment/touch pad is not that awful and you’ll quickly become comfortable with it), then buy a new or lightly used pickup and find a place to store one or the other.

You’ve worked hard. You’ve earned the privilege of acquiring that which appeals to you without doing a precision cost-benefit calculation. Enjoy yourself.

Awkward when the accountant told me I could not deduct fun cars like we have three Tundras and other vehicles and related expenses. An awesome benefit of a corporate set up. I sure miss it.

But like rh47 says, there comes a time to reap the benefits.

However, if I only had one vehicle it would be a truck. Our 2003 Tacoma is so fun.

Totally agree. Pickups have come a longggg way. Ride quality and luxury are amazing--for a truck. Not to mention power. Today I drove back-to-back a 157" WB F150 Platinum (SuperCrew and 6.5' bed) and a most common SuperCrew with a 5.5' bed, in the Limited trim. Both PowerBoost. The power and ride of the 157" was really incredible for a body-on-frame, seriously heavy pickup truck. These things are quick!

No question the Convertible is intoxicating, but really impractical. And in my mind, nothing is more practical than a SuperCrew pickup---thoroughly enjoyable in the Limited trim and PowerBoost. It's not that much slower than an LC 500, but of course still apples and oranges in terms of overall driving experience.

Get the LC, there is no aftermarket tow hitch designed for it but you can always have one custom made.

I plan to do that on mine when it arrives, i need to tow my motorcycles. The workshop that usually makes these custom hitches for 4 wheel drives took a look at the car and he said getting a hitch custom made shouldn't be a problem

I'm assuming of course your boat isn't too large or heavy. I might have spoke too soon

lingcod, you are have a left brain vs right brain fight.

there's no one vehicle that does it all. if you need to tow a boat, you need a truck (or someone else with one, or keep it in a marina or something). if you want to have fun you need an LC500.

i've had suv's luxury sedans, sports cars, etc. i'm still working too and can no longer have just one car. so i have the LC for fun (about to go out for a drive in fact), and i have an SUV for work (company expense).

all the math in the world won't change the grin on your face and joy every time you drive the LC. irrational and emotional? yup! i agonized a lot of last year on it but got one end of the year. zero regrets. even if i get tired of it, any money lost in depreciation is irrelevant compared to the enjoyment.

life is short no matter what, we could be gone today, and if we think "oh might as well just wait a few years" well by then you might not physically enjoy it any longer.

anyway, good luck with your decision. and now i'm off to put a grin on my face.

Left brain/right brain battle is a great way to put it. What I forgot to mention is that I spend the vast majority of my time in Chicago, where roadway infrastructure (amongst other things) is like a third world country. If I were primarily living back in the SF Bay Area, this would be easy: keep my pickup and buy whatever. Plus NorCal is the perfect locale for an LC 500 Convertible where it can stretch its legs while I stretch my soul. But Chicago? Where would I drive this thing?? Sigh. First world problems.

I am thinking you really don’t want to buy a LC500

Au contraire . . . . But it'd be dumb and immature not to be honest about the realities of it being my sole/primary DD in Chicago. In the snow the car is nearly unusable, though limited slip will help a bit. And driving on Mogadishu-like city streets castrates this beautiful machine.

Unless you're just looking for attention and want to show off, it's hard to see how I could truly enjoy it here. That said, few cars have ever captured my emotions. This one does. Maybe it's time to be dumb and immature.

Our 4 cars are a lifted/armored 2018 4Runner (I run an offroading club), a '20 Tesla Model Y (daily), a '00 Acura NSX and a '99 Tacoma with 140K miles. If you told me I had to sell all but one today, I'd keep the Tacoma.

Our third Tundra. My ancestors crossed here in horse drawn wagons for generations.
