Default Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil change interval

Last oil change I did myself, I used Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w-30 which is "designed to provide protection and performance at extended oil change intervals of up to 15,000 miles or 1 year." I've just hit my next 5k miles and wanted your opinions on if I should change it now or wait another few thousand since this oil was designed for extended oil change intervals.

I do 90% highway driving if that makes any difference.

Here is a few links to Mobil 1's FAQ on their Extended Performance oils just to give you an idea of they oil and their claims.

http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lub...erformance.asp
http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...ance_FAQs.aspx

I realize I will get responses from "change it every 3k, better safe than sorry" to "change it when you want, it's your car" to "don't use Mobil 1" to "yeah, should be fine to change at 10k".

I guess I'm looking for confirmation from your guys based on your past knowledge and the manufacturers statement on 15k oil change interval that running up to 7.5k or 10k intervals shouldn't cause a problem.

I'm just trying to optimize my oil change interval based on the oil I'm using. Why change it at 5k if the oil is good for 10k or 15k?

Also, didn't see this type of post before or in the search so sorry if it's been answered.

Thanks guys!

You may want to check out this thread. https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...ght=blackstone

Apparently you can do 10k intervals and just replace the filter and top off the oil level every 5k.

Thanks for the link.

When I read your last comment I can take it two ways. Which way did you mean it.

1. Change oil and filter every 10k. Check/top off oil every 5k.
2. Change oil every 10k. Replace filter and top off oil every 5k.
3. I didn't read it correctly at all.

Not sure on no. 2 how you could change the filter without changing the oil first.

Anyway... thanks for your response and explanation.

#2. Change the filter only and you will lose some oil with it. Just top it off when you install the new filter.

Thanks James.

I guess I was under the impression that removing the oil filter only would dump a lot of oil from the lines. Of course I don't have a lot of knowledge on car innards either.

Since I would have to drive up on ramps, get under car, remove oil filter and let drain, put it all back together. Why wouldn't I just change the oil while I'm under there(other than cost of oil)? Removing one more bolt is a breeze and I already have oil container there.

I guess I'm saying, if I go to all that trouble to change the filter at 5k, I mind as well change the oil. Other than cost of oil, am I missing something?

Again thanks!!!

Why did you use 10W30? The recommended viscosity is 5W20 or 5W30.

I use mobile 1 extended filters, along with the extended syn oils, and leave it in there for 8K on my cars. Works well.

I live in the south and it hardly ever gets really cold here. I've always used 10w-30 in my cars so it's probably more habit than anything. I'm guessing 5w-20 and 5w-30 are good average numbers for Lexus to use to cover everyones car no matter their avg. temp.

I'm up for changing it if it really makes a difference.

I use Mobil 1 syn and change it every 7K. Maybe overkill, but I sleep better at night.

Your car needing an oil change would keep you awake at night? I must be weird. It would never disturb my sleep in the slightest.

Spin, here is a link to my first oil change experience and DIY guide.

It's really easier than it looks/sounds and WAY cheaper than the dealer.

There are no Mobil 1 filters for 2GR and 4GR engines. They use a cartridge, not a spin-on filter. AFAIK, the only option is the OEM filter.

Yo can always send your oil in for analysis. Then you'll know how long you can keep your oil for.

Places like Blackstone Labs have a good reputation.

Lexus recomends 5-20/5-30, but thats only a recomendation, i live in hawaii, what do i need 5w oil for? those nites when we wear our fleece lined levis jackets and its 65f outside? Yes in 65f weather we freeze our butts off here

Im kinda old skool also, even 5k miles seems kinda long for me I change oil every 6months since i average only 200mi per month. This might change thou since im finding every excuse to drive, goto best buy see something/go home look it up on the internet/go back to best buy Im approaching 2months and i already have 1026mi
