Default AA80E Swap and Control

I’m looking for some guidance. I am considering swapping an AA80E into my SC. I’m fairly certain that any of the “better” standalone computers can control the transmission, but cash is going to be tight with the economy slowing down a bit. So, I’m weighing swapping the transmission and using a factory ECU for the engine and a separate controller for the transmission. I found something called MegaShift which may work, but I haven’t seen any real world cases using the AA80E.

My thinking is to switch to a standalone in the future, so keeping it a low cost solution is imperative. I don’t want to spend a bunch of money and then throw it away later. Any ideas would be appreciated fellas.

Thanks!

Nick

This guy did an 8speed to the 2jz, controlling it with something from "Syvecs"

Thanks bud. I’ve seen this video too. Very cool car. I was hoping to avoid a stand-alone initially to just swap it with the stock 1UZ for now. Thinking of how I can do it on the cheap initially.

You are probably the first, and I’m not sure cheap is an option here. We just got the ability to tune this trans this year, so even an oem ISF hasn’t seen much transmission change.

That’s fair. The transmissions themselves aren’t very expensive. I figured the most expensive part of it will be the bellhousing adapter and driveshaft, outside of control.

I found some information from Mega Shift which implies it’s possible, but I don’t know if anyone has done it and the transmission needs certain engine parameters sent to it as well. My ‘97 SC400 doesn’t have DBW, so blipping on downshifts may prove tricky, but I figured I could perhaps do that manually, to some extent.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the transmission? I’m interested to learn what information is coming and going from the Transmission Control Module. I’m thinking I may be better off adapting the transmission AND the module to avoid having to tune all the driveability and behaviors and shift logic after the swap. If I can supply whatever voltages it requires from a standalone, then I would be good to go, in theory.

And just to confirm, the ISF does NOT run on CAN BUS, correct?

Thank you guys!

Ummm. Nope. Definitely CAN BUS on these cars, along with BEAN (Body Electrical Area Network - proprietary network for non-OBD functions like power windows, HVAC, etc.)

Hmm, I had read some conflicting info on this then. Modern standalone computers can do CAN BUS, so I’m not too concerned.

Any info on transmission control module wiring?

Thanks for your feedback!

Didn't youtubers Wrench Everyday do a SC300 swap with an IS-F engine? Maybe check some their videos or they might have info.

Yeah they started a series on it but I haven’t seen any updates in months. They got it in the car physically but haven’t really said anything about how they planned to control it. Plus, they’re using the 2UR-GSE, so they should be able to just swap the cluster in with the engine and transmission and keep the computers and go. That’s my assumption, but I could be wrong.

For what it’s worth, I wanted to also swap the ISF cluster into my SC, to eliminate any issues there and update the look of the cabin. The basic shape of the clusters is similar, so it’d be a little fiberglass work and leather wrapping the dash — shouldn’t be too difficult.

You'd be way ahead to buy a 2 day subscription to TIS and get all the wiring diagrams you need. The good diagrams are color coded. The printable overall diagrams are not. You'd be better off with color screenshots IMHO.

Yeah, would rather save the $20 at this stage of the planning, but if it comes to it, sure I’ll do so. If someone had the manuals or some PDF’s I’d appreciate that help. I’ve got the electrical diagram and service manual for my ‘97 SC 400, in book form, I figured someone may have for the ISF.
