Default Paddle Shifters Caused Serpentine belt to snap?

Hey Guys,

This might be a dumb question but I can’t find the answer anywhere else. I just picked up my 08 ISF with 40k miles and about the 3rd day into it the check engine light, VSC light and battery light pop up. The temperature gauge then dropped all the way to cold. Then all the way to hot and stayed there. I pulled over, popped the hood and I see the serpentine belt snapped, coolant is everywhere and the tensioner is shot. I was pushing the car pretty hard BUT while using the paddle shifters I downshift alot...and then accelerate on the downshifts. So when I’m in 4th gear at 1,500rpm I downshift to 3rd at 3,500rpm, then to 2nd at 5,500rpm and floor it. I don’t redline at all but do this all the time because it gives me a better jump when flooring it. Could this be what caused all these problems? Or just simply by pushing the car too hard for a certain amount of time? Thanks ahead of time!

Check if any of the pulleys are seized. Unless the belt was so dried out, they usually don't break.

Default Paddle Shifters

The pulleys are ok, I just had to get a couple hoses, the serpentine belt and the tensioner replaced. But the paddleshifting thing I was talking about, do u think that’s ok to do?

Yes it’s ok. Your driving is not related... this was just a fluke thing.

I definitely hear a "belt-type squelching noise" when I shift hard using the paddles. I wonder what that is.

Usually it was the tensioner and the serp belt. It is a "common" issue.

It is a problem? Is it fixable?

My car used to make that slipping noise when shifting with the paddles. It was the serpentine belt...I had them change it when they did the water pump change.

downshifting with paddles, in any manner, is not “stupid on the road”. They are there for shifting reasons, regardless of speed and location. I use them all the time, drive very safely.
