Default Buying advise 2008

Hi everyone!

Recently, I sold my V8 X6 to move onto more reliable Lexus.
I’ve always liked the design of earlier IS models and found an ‘08 ISF with only 2000 miles!
Its a local private seller car and was wondering if there is anything that I should consider when inspecting the car!
I don’t know why it has such a low mileage for now but will find out soon.
And, as far as the price goes, the seller wants $40K.. I can understand how he feels about the car if it’s really been sitting in his garage for some (good) reasons but it’s hard to justify to pay that amount for 10+ years old car.
Any advise will be welcomed!!!

Cars that sit can develop issues. That car may not have even ran regularly. For 40, you may be able to find a low mileage newer model with some very sought after upgrades like blue tooth and an LSD rear end, updated interior, etc.

i paid less than 40 for my 2013 1 owner with 28k. All dealer maintenance records, etc.

you can find low mileage GSFs for a little more than 40. In the end it depends on what it’s worth to you. Most on this board will feel that 40 is to much for an 08.

^ Agreed. Don't really see an advantage with something that low of mileage and definitely doesn't justify the price hike. x2 with what JWconeil said...you could probably find something newer with the later years upgrades with still relatively low mileage and cheaper. Welcome to Lexus reliability, where there's ISF's with 300k miles being sold and still going strong.

i really appreciate your input!
There is one GSF with 37k miles asking for $47k in my area..

As far as the ISF goes, how much should I make an offer to have a great deal if I proceed?
Mans what are the issues that it can cause from not being driven regularly?

Thanks.

Slightly off topic but that member just pated up his car in the for sale section here I believe.

Agree with the others. $40k is touch and for that you could find a newer model with reasonable miles.

As far as sitting, I don't see the big deal. I bought my 08 back in 2014 (for $38k) with only 5k miles and it has been problem free for the last 5 years and 75k miles.
Good luck with your search!

Seals dry out. Everything in an engine needs lubed. Without running it dries. May not show up right away, but a car that sits long term will start leaking way sooner than a car that doesn’t. Also, odd things can happen. I bought a mint one owner low mileage MR2. Thing was hardly ever driven. Oil pump seized at 70k. I have never heard of another oil pump seizing.

if cars are not driven they should be brought up to full operating temperature regularly to lug and pressurize seals.

In my opinion, no 08 is ever worth more than 33-34. 08-09 are by far the worst years. Their suspension was notoriously rough. Literally, most ISFs were built and sold in 08. They are not rare like later years. The car did not get an LSD until 2010. The updated 12-14 models are sought after. The 10-11 models are mildly sought after because of LSD, which costs a lot to buy aftermarket.

He asked us this same question. We all told him the same thing. An 08 with 2000 miles is worth less than a 12 with 45000 miles.

All 100% true^^^
I'd pay $40k for a 12+ F with 50k miles before I paid $40k for an 08 that's brand new with 0 miles in all honesty.

As of right now, today, I definitely would. 08s are 11 years old now (which isn't "old", especially for a Lexus), and sitting for 11 years not being used does more harm than good....and STILL doesn't make it a better car than a '12+ with:
*LSD
*Black housings/led headlights
*Wider wheels
*Better looking wheels (can be subjective)
*Better looking gauge cluster (can be subjective)
*Thicker steering wheel
*Better looking piano Black dash bezel (can be subjective)
*Bluetooth/USB

And I'm sure I'm missing a few things. So again, for the same money, you're leaving a lot of features/items/upgrades on the table, mileage be damned.

This is all subjective. If you want a 2000 mile ISF... you may never find another one. I just personally don’t see it valued anywhere near 40.

In my opinion for 2k miles and $40k if for collection, maybe. the 08 has Neiman Marcus edition which I find it rare. to daily drive it, no. The upgrades in the later years model doesn't make it any special if the car is for collection, other than to daily drive or use it on track. If you are plan to daily drive it, the RC/GS Fs are with much better upgrades than 10+ models ISF in the $40k price point.
