Default Smog Visit in CA

Hello all. The ISF I bought recently was in Oregon, so I had to take it to a smog place to have them test it. I typically go to a place in Rocklin, CA. I thought it was funny so just sharing. I pull up and go inside and the conversation goes like this:

Me: "Hello, I would like to get my car tested. Just brought it in from out of state."
Tester Dude at Counter: "No problem. What is the year, make and model?"
Me: "2011 Lexus IS F"
Tester Dude at Counter: "250? 350?"
Me: "What?"
Tester Dude at Counter: "The model...is it a 250 or 350?"
Me: "Oh, just F"
Tester Dude at Counter: "(crickets)" While literally scratching his head, walks out to the bays and looks at the back of the car - walks to the front where the hood is up and he and the tech guy talk about it for a minute and then he comes back in. He didn't say anything else and just told me the total.

Anyway, I just thought it was funny. Love driving the car. I'm an amateur BMW mechanic and that is what I've driven for years. This is an amazing machine.

Have a good one.
Brad

Happens to all of us I'm sure. I usually just tell people I have the 350 F sport, when they ask 250 or 350. It just causes too much trouble when you say F. Then you have to follow up with further explanation on why it's different. And you know while you're explaining all this, they're zoning off and not paying attention.

Either way, you're coming in at a good time. Our ECUs are finally unlocked and tunes galore by different vendors.

I was reading about that. It is still under warranty so I won't mess with it probably until that is over. I'm amazed that a car like this can pass CA smog. Anyway, I need to read more about the tuning and what differences they are achieving. Thanks!

Brad its funny I drive all around Sac and i think I have had 1 or two people give me the "oh **** nice ISF nod or thumbs up"!! Aside from that I'm just in a bright colored 250 lol

I had one guy at the gas station say "that is a bad *** color on your IS 250. Is that custom, no wait thats the F sport right?". LOL.. I shook my head and said No its an IS-F... he gave me the same deer in headlights you got at the smog place.. i just laughed and told him to have a good day..

I get the same response with my 2000 Saab 5 oor Lighting Blue Viggen. Only 50 of them were imported to the states in 2000 so you dont see them ever. So people think its a regular Saab, when I Say Viggen its game over.

Welcome again to the club...

Net week we should grab In N Out :P

I mean no disrespect to the other IS guys but I agree with the point about the f sport and F confusion. Reminds me of the "M" world at BMW that is getting confusing with them slapping "M" logos on anything practically. This is a new world for me and the machine dumbfounds me. It is a beast. I really don't push it hard and haven't really turned on the stereo since the engine does that for me.

lol. I like that it is a sleeper to a degree and either you know what it is or you don't. I'm game for getting together - although the girlfriend has determined we need to start Paleo so that started yesterday.

This is why you need to uncork the beast, get an exhaust. Once they hear you coming with that rumbling V8, they know it's not a regular IS.

I've been into 2nd gen MR2's for 15 years now, and currently own a heavily modded (by me) '91 turbo. A few months ago I drove by a similar 2 in my neighborhood, a lowered '93 sunroof turbo on jdm rims, on my usual route home. One day I saw the garage door open, and stopped in to chat with the fellow car dude, who was inside wrenching on a couple of swapped Civics. He was extremely knowledgeable about all kinds of cars, and mentioned he had done a few Mr2 motor swaps (his had the jdm only Gen. III). About an hour into our conversation, I mentioned I had recently acquired an Is-F. He gave me the blank look, then asked "Oh, is that the one with the 3.5 liter six in it?"
