Default YZZA4 oil filter explanation from a lexus tech

So getting an oil change at a lexus dealer, i brought my own dino oil (mobil) and my YZZA4 filter. Service tech says this isn't what the F calls for. I told him it's the same as listed on their parts page for an 08 ISF. His explanation was that the one called for the F is for synthetic oil and the YZZA4 is for conventional. Hello, the F doesn't call for synthetic as a requirement for the F and ya'll have been using the same mobil conventional oil on my car when i 1st brought it in for my complimentary 1st oil change.

Lexus needs trained F techs is all i have to say. Or send out a simple memo on basic stuff about our cars. Ok venting over.

The good news is that the F has it's own specific oil filter...

04152-51010

If Lexus wanted to use YZZA4 or YZZA5 for cost cutting, they would have done it by now..

I'm sure there is something special to the right filter.

That's not the right part number for the F.

Sorry

Put the right part number in the search area on a different parts site...

Then you will see the right coding & price for the IS-F Oil Filter.

For some reason, they have an overide in their system to reflect the incorrect part# for the IS-F.

Below are a couple examples of the right price & descriptions off other sites.

I thought we put this to bed a couple of years ago I have used both the 51010 and the YZZA4, and to my eyes - they are the same. IMO, the difference in price is based on usage, there's much less call for a specific use ISF filter than a multi-use filter for the Tundra or the Big Toyota or Lexus SUVs. Either or both PNs can be built in Thailand or Japan. Again, I have discussed this with the parts manager at my Lexus dealer, and he agrees they are the same filter. The media is the same and the dimensions are identical. The only difference is that the YZZA4 is for vehicles equipped with a vertically mounted filter and therefore contains a gasket and a drip piece that the horizontally mounted ISF filter doesn't require. My wife's ES350 uses a smaller filter that is the same OD as the larger YZZA4 and is vertically mounted and I use the hardware on her's when I do an oil change.

A special filter for synthetic oil, now I've heard everything. And yes, Sewell sells the YZZA4 for the F, not the more expensive 51010. They must have done the same comparison as my dealer and I did

^^ Don't forget the colors are indeed different .. LoL

Funny how the one with more gaskets & drip tube costs 50% less...

So funny, that I'm LOL all the way to the bank.

But seriously Joe, do you really think that Lexus would make an inferior oil filter for the LX? It's cheaper because it's use is so much broader and it's used on Toyota vehicles as well as Lexus.

Just to add a little fuel to the fire, my used oil analysis shows the YZZ filter does a fine job - silicates are very low, and there is nothing in the wear analysis to suggest oil starvation is a problem. And I definitely spend some time at high load/high rpm so if there was an issue it would spike the iron in my results.

I think Lou is right on the money with his analysis - broad application vs. very few made for a specific model without the "extras."

Well the F ones arriving recently are from Thailand too.... Color is still different .

Plus I think the YZZA4 part number is printed onto the filter element.. (i think)
While the F specific filter has nothing printed on it..

I'm not saying its inferior, but maybe there is a slight flow difference?? Who knows!!

My point was that there is a specific number for a reason.
If the same exact filter was reboxed into the F part#, then I would say "yeah they are the same".. But they are not..

Over the years I have seen tons of cost cutting...
Right down to the 1999 RX Reflectors on our IS-F bumpers. Those two reflectors are used on over 6 different Lexus / Toyota Models, over the last 10 years...

Or

How about the mis-matched non-directional front & rear drilled rotors to cut down on 4 different part numbers...

.. I can go on with a long list.

I guess till there is some official word or update, I don't mind spending a few extra Lexus Points I have for the right part number...

So far all my OEM IS-F Filters have been Free...

Well, I pay for mine No here. However, I do really get them free with the points from my Lexus Visa Card. In any event you will keep on using the 51010 filters and I will keep on using the YZZA4s. I guess were both hard heads

Bringing back this old thread to add some more fuel to the fire. TRD now makes a high performance Oil Filter that will fit the "F". PN PTR43-00081. It's got end caps and a different type of construction than their regular oil filters.
