Default 245/285 tires for ISF...how does it affect handling?

Just found my Bridgestones were done on the front and nearly done on the rear, I am considering going up in size. Can anyone comment on how the handling is affected? Any alignment issues? Looking at Continental DW and Hankook. I've read mixed reviews on the Hankook but they did really well in Car and Driver's tests...Can't see spending the extra money for pilots.

Thanks!

235/265 is a much better choice. The wider tires are fishier at higher speeds.

How so? And what does "fishier" mean?

I'm running 245/35/19 and 285/30/19 Continental Extreme DW tires on the stock wheels on my F. The handling is fine. The car feels a little more planted. I've noticed I can take some tight freeway exit turns a little faster than I could with the stock Michelin's. I did not realign my wheels, and so far I have not noticed uneven wear. I have about 1K miles on them now. I have no idea what TinCan is talking about.

When I ran the 285-30-19 tire size on the rear wheels, I felt the car had a bit of play or fishing from side to side after a lane change or a light jerk on the steering wheel. After going down to the 265-30-19 tire size, the play went away. I've heard that the 285 is more set up for a wider rim. Where as the 265 is a better choice on the 9" wide rear wheels.

I have a friend with a C63 and the same issue happened when he went to a wider tire than the rim called for.

I also ran this same setup but in a Nitto Invo. The Invo may have a softer side wall than the Cotinentals, that would cause the problem I'm refering to.

I've used NT01's at the race track and find that at high track temperatures, performance starts to drop dramatically after 8 laps and gets worse than a street tire after 12 laps.

For time attack applications, they are great.

A better tire for the track is what I have on my track car now, Dunlop 03G. warms up quickly and stays at peak for longer.

What is the recommended max width we can put on the stock wheels?

^^^^The tire manufacturers say the 275/30/19 is the widest tire that you should fit on a 9" wheel. I went with the 285/30/19 because I wanted to keep the OD of the front and rear tires constant, like the stockers. IMHO, the 285s are working great on my stock 9" wheels.

I just ordered a set of the 245/285 combo for my buddy's ISF. We went with the Hankook Ventus V12s, I'll let you know my feelings about these tires once they are mounted.
