afastcar, that is probably the best way to go, so that your painter can properly strip off the original chrome and sand the whole piece down before painting. I hear that the clips break very easily and it may be neccessary to order new ones for re-install. But if your painter/body shop is experienced, should be cake.
BTW, you'll still have some more chrome in your headlight housing and stock lugs. I haven't worked up the cajones to F with my headlights yet.
Whoever told you there are clips doesn't know what he's talking about. The strip is riveted in - 7 in front and 6 in the back. You'll need to drill out the rivets to remove it and reinstall with new rivets. That's why I decided it wasn't such a great idea to remove it for a re-chrome with black chrome.

Damn, I heard that was the case as well when I was looking into it for my IS350. I was hoping maybe it was different for the F. Oh well, I guess maybe it's back to my original plan to vinyl wrap them black.

Your right..... Im also checking on doing the headlights and checking on doing wheels but I really like the factory ones.
I wanted to match paint it also, however there was too many things that came in the way. it was just toooo difficult to take it off and painting chrome isnt easy unless you have professional help (to make it look clean). instead of painting it you can may be use dark vinly or something but i wouldnt take it off;. If something messes up then its not cheap to buy new ones..
I must have been misinformed on how the trim is attached. Does anyone have pics of a blk vinyl job on the trim? Optioning to eventually do that or have a body shop take those darn things off and strip it...but so far no issues.
allklr - really not sure how many coats..I took my car in along with my brothers q7 to get a bunch of stuff done so I didnt really ask too many specific questions lol
