I was interested in getting the chrome tips powdercoated to black chrome or gloss black. Anyone know how to remove these suckers, or does the bumper or exhaust have to come off?
From pics/videos it looks like a slip-on tip over standard piping. My past bmw stock slip-on tips were simply tension fitted, so removal just required some elbow grease with pulling/shimmying them off.

I think it would look nicer without the chrome...
Did you ever do this? Was looking at some black or carbon fiber tips.
I replaced my stock exhaust with Borla axle-back but wanted to check the size of the stock tips in the event I ever go back to stock, I'd want to get them black ceramic coated (powder coating will fail quickly). Removal was honestly cake with a little PB Blaster and brute force by hand to twist it back and forth until it slid off. But if you're also looking to replace the tips all together, it looks like 2-inch inlet is the right size.

No need to worry about the powder coating. The tips do not get no where near being hot enough to have a failure. I touched them have after a three hour highway drive and were only warm to the touch. Had my Bazooka RR exhaust stainless steel tips powder coated and put on when installed last summer. Looks great no flaking, no problems. Exhaust is awesome and sounds great! No worries!
Good to know. Would love to find some nice looking tips that replace the stock ones. Planning on a mid-pipe upgrade but keeping the stock mufflers so upgrading the tips would really up the overall look from the outside.
Got bored and quickly modeled and 3d peinted some 4" mockups to see if they would align correctly and clear with the stock tips. Everything clears, but can't seem to find anyone who makes 2" to 4" exhaust tips readily available. Seems everything out there starts with a 2.25" or 2.5" inlet as those are much more common exhaust tubing sizes.
That’s great confirming the fit with 4” tips - I was wondering if we can make it work.
If you do find a nice set of black 4” tips up to 2.5” inlet, you can always take them to a good exhaust shop and they can expand the stock outlet pipe from 2 to 2.5. Alternatively, they can also just weld the tips. I’d just make sure they’re made from T-304 stainless steel. The cheap ones will eventually rust.
I’ve decided to go back to the stock mufflers. The Borlas are awesome - sound awesome and look even better, but a tad too loud for my taste and way too loud for my wife (formally complained over the weekend).
I just dropped the stock chrome tips to have them powder coated in gloss black. I stand corrected @MYIS500 - my trusted powder coating shop confirmed they always do it with no durability concerns. I would have loved slightly bigger and fully rounded tips, but I’m good with the stock ones for now as long as they’re not chrome. I’ll post before/after pics when I get them back later this week.
Sorry to gear about the Borla units. Would be half tempted to take them off your hands but shipping would be a complete PITA.
I did order up a set of the universal fit clamp on style tips and will see how they looks. Total was a little over $100 to my door so ive set my expectations kind of low. Going to pair this with a custom fabbed mid-pipe with an x-pipe hopefully to get the right balance of looks and sound.
I'll get to posting the Borlas for sale this weekend. Once I have them boxed back up, I'll have the box weight and dimensions to calculate shipping rates if you're interested. Likely will take a nice loss on them, so my loss will be some lucky buyer's gain for being only 1-week old.
Just picked up the tips from the powder coating shop. They came out soooooooo good and look even better on the car. This should have been an option from Lexus to begin with.
