Default 2021 availability

I'm still happy with my 2017 IS300 Fsport, but I am planning on moving to a new IS350 when the time is right.
I searched 6 dealers near me, and the inventory was sparse. Two to three vehicles, a mix of 300s and 350s.
I saw some 350s in the 50K+ MSRP range. The price reflected the ML sound, rather than the DHP.
Maybe I saw one DHP amongst all the dealers. I am going to hold out for at least a 15% discount, if possible.
Old news, but is this due to the chip shortage, really?

I would avoid buying a car in 2021, 2022 and 2023 as there are shortages of everything due to rona. Your 2017 will last for a crazy long time so you can hold out unless you want to get ripped off or you are tied to a lease that you have not mentioned.

I agree. It's not a buyers market right now. I got my 2021 in January and was lucky to get a $46k 350 for $38k. They actually had 20 of the 350's with various options at the time. Now they only have 2 on the lot. I doubt I could of got a discount if I bought it now. Expect to pay MSRP. Dealers are trying to buy back our 2019 leased Tacoma for about $6000 over current buyout. Definitely not a buyers market...

Pretty much. A lot of manufacturers have had to put certain plants on hold because they can't get chips. Plus cars aren't' exactly the big sellers anymore. How many SUVs do they have in stock?

Chip shortage is starting to have major real-world consequences (cnbc.com)

I have friends who are suppliers. There are shortages in chips, plastics, and other raw materials.
my understanding is that we are at the worst of it now and that it should improve substantial in Q4 or Q1.

It’s definitely a sellers market right now.

Why do you want another new car 2017 is fairly new I’m still driving my 2014 IS350 still drives like new? If you’re wanting more power wait for IS500. You’re going to regret it a yr from now whether you should have bought V8.

Not a time to buy. Paying MSRP would be the best deal you could hope for, likely would have to pay more if/when you found the car you wanted.

Now if you have an extra car you can get buy using for a while...it is the time to sell. Our Hyudai CUV selling for $4-5k more than we bought it for 2 years ago. If I could get my hands on a temporary replacement car....I'd sell. But to buy new right now is not a good idea.. New car prices will recover eventually, used prices I doubt will recover quite as much.

RKSTRAT - I'll just chime in as a guy who owned the 2017 (and 2015) and now owns a 2021. As others have said, the 2017 is a perfectly fine vehicle and there is no need to upgrade to a 2021 given that several (not all) of the changes are cosmetic but I will say that I do enjoy GREATLY the touchscreen for the infotainment. I am in the Canadian market so we can't compare apples to apples but I do see dealers here with limited supplies as far as their inventory so the chip shortage is also affecting them. Some dealers seem more affected than others, and I'll give you an example, the GM dealers in my area has fewer than 20 vehicles (total) on their lot so I don't know how the sales team survive - 3 trucks, a few SUVs, 2 Sparks and 2 BOLTs.

Now again, I am not sure how much negotiating there is available in the States but I don't think anyone would get a 15% discount off MSRP here in Canada, especially on a 2021 with limited supply.

Best of luck though and keep us posted - Suffice to say, I am really happy I made the switch from my RC back to the IS!

Having just bought a 2021 IS in Ontario, they were barely willing to discount at all. Only saving grace were the low rates and some wiggle room on trade-in. Although, this could entirely be because I'm awful at negotiating.

^^ I agree, 0% rate, good residual and I had a few K's off so I am happy given how tight the inventory are

Thanks for the helpful replies.
I certainly won't keep my 2017 beyond the 6 year powertrain warranty.
In November, the 4 year warranty will end.
I will also be losing the Safety Connect around the same time.
The Apple CarPlay in the 2021 is an attraction, along with the other minor tweaks.
Also, I would be upgrading hp from my 300. But, I assume the low end power in the 2021 350 will probably be similar to my pokey 300.
The MSRP on the IS500 base will be around 65K? I can't justify that, as I am not driving much these days.
So I'm just scoping out the 2021 inventories, with the expectation that I will get some sort of deal on a 350 eventually.

My guess is it will start a little less than the RC-F which starts I think around 68. So I'd expect 65-70 optioned up.

Lexus reliability is rock solid not sure why you’d be worry about powertrain warranty. Even 4 yr warranty that covers electrical components you will rarely see anything break maybe the radio but it’s only common on 2014, mine is still working. It will probably makes sense for you to lease the next car.

It’s a matter of style and comfort zone, but I like to use the equity in a four year old car
to launch the next one. Leasing may be better, but I like ownership.

^^ To each their own, I go in with 0 down, get my lease payment as low as possible with a 48 month lease and then at 24 month in, I am at the break even point where I can get out with zero penalty and just roll into a new one. I don't mind a lease payment - Cars are my enjoyment in life so since I don't smoke, drink, eat out or travel, no kids and such, might as well do the thing I do love! That is the beauty of this site, everyone has a unique situation and we can share and learn from each other while being respectful to others
