Was driving my 2014 is250 home today when it suddenly shot to 7k rpm and then I lost power entirely. It feels like the engine is not connected to the wheels. Putting it in D or R does nothing. The engine just spins freely. No check engine codes. The car was making a nasty whining noise the day prior to this even however. Any ideas? I was thinking perhaps shift solenoids blew.
Sorry to hear this happened.
While it's possible the tranny could have been damaged, it's not a common occurrence by any means.
The whining noise you mentioned, any chance it was coming from the rear of the vehicle? Like the differential. If the differential was damaged it would create the same effect of no movement in D or R.
If your IS is RWD, block the front wheels, jack the rear off the ground and support it on jack stands. Start the car, put it in D or R and see if the prop shaft from the transmission to differential is spinning...you can see it where it's connected to the differential.
If the shaft is spinning, then likely the tranny if fine. If it's not spinning, then likely the issue is with the tranny.
Do you have a check engine light on? If not, then likely it is not the transmission.

No, the whining noise was definitely from the front. Almost sounds like an RC car when it was dying. I was able to start the car today and back it into my driveway before it lost power again, so the diff is fine. No CEL but I pulled codes with techstream and got p0751, p0761, p2714. Not particularly encouraging. It is a AWD IS250.
With three solenoid codes it sounds like the tranny is done.
The likelihood is the solenoids are physically fine, but something inside the tranny has let go causing them to not function properly.
What's the mileage on the car? When was the tranny fluid changed last?

As much as they claim "lifetime" fluid, clearly nothing lasts forever.
I think for most they would have changed the fluid at least once by 60K, if not more often, as you only get about 1/3 out on a drain and fill.
I guess the next step is either used tranny or new car.
The Whining sound before it went out was likely the Pump in the Transmission. It was likely whining for a while just increased before it quit and that did it for the Transmission.
I would Not try to go to a Tranny shop and have it rebuild. Shop for the lowest price low miles (verified vin # car) used one you can get. With the right shop, not that bad to install a new one.
Finally got around to pulling the pan. Fluid is a milky brown color and the strainer looks like it's got some metal in it. Attached some pics. Any thoughts? Doesn't really look like the magnets in the actual pan caught much.
Usually when you see the milky brown color it means the tranny fluid mixed with something that contained water...usually the simplest explanation is coolant from the cooler...on the side of the tranny in this case.
The material in the strainer looks like clutch disc material from the clutch packs, which is non-magnetic mostly, so it wouldn't have stuck to the pan magnetics.
The tranny will need a complete rebuild and possibly a new cooler...or you could just replace the entire tranny with a used/rebuilt unit.
