Default Pop up hood, malfunction

Hi everyone,

I have 2015 Lexus is300h, yesterday when I was parking, I slightly tapped the my front bumper, and then my hood popped up with the pedestrian safety pop hood up. Everything about my car is fine, besides now that my hood was forcibly popped up by this safety feature. I took it to Lexus and they told me it will cost 3000 dollars to replace the unit....

Is this a defective part by Lexus or a malfunction? I would understand if I actually hit something and caused damage, but this was a slight tap in the front license plate with no visible damage at all. Can I claim this as a defective part?

please advise.

I tapped the front bumper while parking. There was no damage to my bumper, grill or hood, just the bumper being popped up.

I think you have to be going at least 5 mph for the thing to activate, not just the warning light but the full safety feature. If it did go off then you need a bunch of parts and the SRS module reset.

the car was at a full stop, then it rolled forward for a foot and tapped the object in the front. Neither was damaged except for the popped up hood

Where can I find (more) technical details like this regarding the pop up hood system?
