Default HOWTO: easy dashcam install through dome light cavity

Here's a quick how-to install a dashcam in 15 minutes, using the simpleusb adapter 10-pin voltage adapter for dashcam installation, shown using my personal '15 350F.

  1. Remove your dome light assembly: Use your finger nails between the front edge of the light assembly and the headliner (make sure your hands are clean!). Pull the entire assembly towards you, and then down. It should pop out fairly easily.

  2. Remove wire covers:
  3. Pull the harness connector back into the cavity:

  4. Attach the adapter and add a USB cable:

  5. Route the adapter back through the hole and connect back into the mirror:

  6. Route cable to camera and tuck excess:

  7. Replace plastic covers & dome light assembly doing steps one and two backwards. It is a tight fit but the adapter is manufactured to fit perfectly.

  8. Test it out!

Very clean install, I actually tap the power from mirror harness directly with pins. You didn’t mention where you got the adapter? You made it yourself? Does the adapter convert from 12v to 5v because if you didn’t then it will destroy the dash cam they don’t operate on 12v.

Can you post pictures of how you did your setup? And maybe include what materials and dashcam you used. Thanks!

Here's the 12V to 5V converter I've been using for 5+ years now. https://amzn.to/34NJXvT

If the dash cam calls for 5V, you will want to use a converter. I don't use big goofy dash cam with big plastic buttons, big screen, hanging down, obvious etc.

I use a tiny tiny stealth black box with a camera at the end that mounts almost flush to the windshield. tiny. nobody sees it. extremely discreet. doesn't scream "break in and steal me" or "break in and disable me so i can commit a crime" or "hey look i'm recording so unplug me before you do something" (like if you take your car for servic etc)

mine hides behind the mirror. nobody knows it's there.

I found Simpleusbport on Amazon not sure this is made for Lexus but better check with seller before buying. Looks to be an easy solution instead of tapping the power with pins and soldering the wires to DC converter which I did myself.

I forgot where I bought the pins from but this is pretty much pre-made ones on Amazon.

Do we have Type A (black) or Type B (white) connectors? The Simple USB website (Dongar) says Type B is for Lexus which matches the photos here.

I see the Type B is currently unavailable.

Looks to be Type B for Lexus. According to seller Type A is for Nissan, Mazda, Infiniti.

Sorry for the late reply guys! I am the maker of that SimpleUSB adapter. Pretty much all modern Lexus vehicles and Japan built Toyotas use the Type-B connector. If there is a non-JDM Lexus these days it probably uses a different connector though. I redesigned the Type B adapter to be a little shorter and with different insulation and just had a batch of these adapters built.

I hope to send over to Amazon within the next two weeks, but still need to work on the install instructions and product photos. In the meantime, for anyone wanting to DIY it, here is the wiring diagram for this mirror:

cool idea. Are you using a buck converter to bring the 12v to 5v? I personally run the usb and hide it in the A pillar so I can have access to the USB cable. Just in case I get into an accident and there's no SD card reader anywhere, I can just plug the camera into any mac/pc laptop and pull the video.

Is the line feeding enough amps for a dual cam like Thinkware?

It's a very good idea to have a hidden camera. Can you post up the link where you got it? Thanks

Any updates or plans to have more adaptors made?

Also are you aware of any issues with this wiring set up on cars equipped with the LSS camera module next to the auto dimming mirror?

This looks to be easiest and cleanest set up I've seen. I'm not knowledgeable enough and I don't want to deal with running wires all the way down to the fuse box.
