Talking IS 250 F-Sport 2015 Oil Change

I've hit my 50K miles on my 2015 IS 250 F-Sport. I've already had a brake job and I've kept up on the included maintenance up to the 50K. The dealer is quoting me $300 for my 50K service. I asked them what is included and it seems like a lot of inspection with an oil, filter and cabin filter change. A fuel injector flush is also part of the service. I priced these three from the parts department its less than $100. I have been changing the oils on my vehicles for the last 20 years. I see on Youtube that these cars use a membrane system for the filter (see
). I prefer to use dealer oil because I understand AEC-Q200 and the dealer oil will have good viscosity and flow with the dealer filter.

Is there anything else I should be looking for?

I got my oil changed by a third party mechanic this time around because my local Lexus dealership took away their oil change special. Just to give you some insight, Lexus oil is extremely overpriced and technically, it's Toyota synthetic oil. Toyota does not make their own oil, they get it from somewhere else. I used Mobil 1 full synthetic oil (same one in showed in this video) which is cheaper and says it will last up to 15K (but I will change at 10K regardless). Bought it from Sam's club 5 quartz at $30-40? (I forgot), Lexus OEM filter, and paid the mechanic $15 to change it. Completed it within 15-20 min.. versus Lexus dealership where they take over 1.5-2 hours for this job.

Here are some eBay listings of sellers selling the Toyota oil if you really want to use that:
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...+synthetic+oil

Lexus was trying to charge me $50 - 60 for the oil alone..

Good luck

I've been using Mobil 1 for oil changes, typically buy in bulk when on sale from Costco, Walmart, Amazon etc.
I bought a 10pack of oil filters off ebay a while back, and they included corresponding crush washers as well.

Oil filter p/n: 04152-31080
Oil drain crush washer p/n: 90430-12031

I went to my local autoparts store to pickup the right oil filter wrench, i think it's a 65mm 14flute.

I've been using the F Sport Drop in Filter for my engine intake filter, and TYC for the cabin air filter.

OEM engine intake filter p/n: 17801-3117
FSport drop in intake filter p/n: PTR03-53141-AA

OEM cabin air filter p/n: 87139-30100
TYC cabin air filter p/n : TYC 800179C

Check out Amazon 0W-20 oil. 5 quart jug $20 bucks. There's a brand called Idemitsu which is factory fill for subarus. same price. i'll be using that next time around (either one)

The amazon has been tested independently on youtube and shows extremely impressive wear protection. about on par with the big names.

Even blackstone labs says the brands don't really matter. as long as the oil has the correct viscosity and certification (they all do) then it's good. any differences are within fractions of a percent and could only be measured by a lab. people put too much faith in brands. as long as it has the correct designation on the back.

Thanks for mentioning that it's been on my mind. I know this, read the articles, asks the experts, but have a hard time excepting it ha! So I have Mobile 1 ready for my next change lol. Stuck in my ways that I feel I've got "better oil". I agree though, brands are over rated.

I saw the tests on Amazon oil as well. O'Reilly's had there brand for about the same price.

Apparently it even has the SN Plus certification. I’m still going to do Mobil 1 though haha.

Thumbs up

Thank you all for your feedback.

I was speaking to a good friend of mine. He's a GM Master Tech and has been sent to various training's throughout various General Motors schools in the US. He was enlightening me with information he had learned regarding dealer oils vs off the shelf oils. In one of his most recent training sessions he was learning that the oils that dealers use are on a different quality level than what is available commercially. He was saying that some have to come from certain wells. Apparently the viscosity and other fluid stuff makes dealer oil flow as designed for the vehicle engine. One of the most important materials is the the oil filter. If not chosen correctly, certain commercial oils in conjunction with certain commercial oil filters will impede the oil flow through the filter and the rest of the engine. I have some basic understanding of combustion engines and I know that oil flow throughout the inner engine is very important. Especially for performance vehicles such as ours'.

So it sounds like the most important service every 10,000 is the oil change.

Ive even heard of people putting 5w-20 in these engines if theyre driven really hard, like multiple track days per month. Can anyone else comment on this? I dont think that I would be doing something like that, because lexus designed the motor for 0w, so I'm assuming 0w is the best.

Disclaimer, the following is based on my understanding of how oils work and not based on my (lack of) experience.

If anything, for track days I figure you want the high-temperature protection more so than low-temperature. So I would think something that still maintains the 0 cold weight would be fine, but you'd want a higher grade in the second part. So, 5w-30 would be better for track days compared to 0w-20. 0w-30 oils do exist as well.

I really don't see the point of using 5w-20. You get (potentially) worse fuel economy while getting no more protection than 0w-20. But for warm climates, outside of track driving, perhaps it is fine to use.

0w-20 for slightly better gas mileage and really cold temp startups.
5w-20 works fine for daily/spirited driving

Hey how has it been going with your IS250 all-wheel-drive. I’m on my way right now to test drive and possibly purchase one. I’m a fairly mild mannered driver. I just drove the 350 and it’s way too fast for me. I do like the F sports seats however. I care mostly about handling and versatility. Most of my driving is county roads zero to 45 mph. Thanks for your time.
