New 2018... Transport Damage.
End of August, ended up signing up for a lease for a 2018 IS 350 F Sport that was going to be manufactured in Japan and was going to arrive and transported to the US around now. The vehicle will arrive tomorrow; however...
Salesman called me today saying that he received photos of "transport damage" on the roof and from his perspective and tone, pretty severe.
Since I am new with this, and probably a lot more experienced people on this forum:
1) Is this vehicle considered "new" or now has incurred an accident and devalue the vehicle in the future?
2) Since it was one of the last 2018 models made, and the 2019's are coming out, I believe the salesman will try and find a similar model across the US, but not guaranteed.
3) I have been waiting over a month for this vehicle, and have already made a payment towards it. If they are unable to replace the vehicle, is it wrong for me to ask for repercussions due to inability to deliver as promised and/or what to ask for?
4) Is there anything I should watch out for in terms of the dealership offering deals?

Depends if when they fix it, they report it to CLUE or not. If it goes on the vehicles history, it will hurt value. I would definitely want some money refunded. Most important... Talk to your insurance and ask what they think.
A few things.
Unless you are considering buying it out at the end of the term, why do you care about diminished value since it's a lease?
WHY are you making payments on a vehicle you haven't taken delivery of yet?? That's insane!
Finally, you can completely decline taking delivery of the car if the damage is that bad. If you are okay with the damage/repair use it to your advantage and ask for a reduction in price. No harm in asking.

I was thinking about buying it out at the end of the term. It'll be my second car to purchase, first was an 07' IS 350 and kept it for 11 years, and this new one was one of the only vehicles left with the options I desired so I signed the papers early for it. First payment was waived, and jumped on the second, wasn't planning on anything to happen during the transporting of the vehicle.
Salesman sent me the pictures, and looks someone got a massive, heavy and sharp object and scratched the roof and where the side door/roof connects in multiple areas. Roof is cratered in about 3 inches downwards over the area of 2-3 feet. The paint isn't scratched to where it's an easy fix, metal is scraped off and looks like a 1 inch canyon down.
Not sure what happened, but yeah, thanks for the thoughts, I think I'll be going for a completely different vehicle or ask for repair (if flawless) and ask for $10-$15k off and purchase.

Yeah, I've never heard of making payments on a car before actually having the car. I would definitely get them to knock off quite a bit if they are able to fix it. Otherwise, go for a different car.

With the money we spend on these vehicles, no way would I accept a vehicle with damage even if it were minor. And I also don't get making payments before getting the vehicle. It's like buying a house and making mortgage payments before getting the keys.
