Default Is300h 2014

Hi all, i am looking to buy a 2014 lexus IS300h and i am looking for a bit of feed back on them. Are they reliable , is there more to go wrong with them been a petrol & Hybrid and my real concern how long do the batteries last before needing replaced and is it huge money to replace a battery. Ive been driving diesels but had DPF troubles because i dont do big mileage so i need to move to a petrol and i like the idea of the hybrid aswel. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks

Unfortunately the IS300h isn't offered in the US so the feedback pool is going to be a little smaller. Hopefully some of our other out of country members can help... I do know that the ES300h engine has been very reliable in the US and I believe it's the same as the IS300h variant.

Hi Byrnew, I'm based in Ireland and have a IS300H Fsport. From the research done before I purchased the car it is known for the usual Toyota reliability so I wouldn't worry about high maintenance costs.
I came from a BMW E92 and that gave me lots of troubles in the past. Lexus do a free Hybrid battery check each time you bring it in for a service and I think there is a warranty on the battery up to 90k miles (don't quote me on that)
Mines a 2014 model which I picked up in the UK. I would suggest you have a look across the pond as there are lots more variety (better trim/ options) than here in Ireland. So far I have 32k miles on the clock and no issues to report (thankfully).

I have done over 90,000kms on mine over 4 years. I am on my 3rd 12v battery, and 2nd Hybrid battery. I also had one leaking shock absorber replaced. What else would you like to know?

I am a happy owner of a 2015 Lexus Is300h F sport in Spain. My car is 93000 km and I did not have any problem with it, so I have no complains about it. It is an amazing car and it is a pleassure to drive it.
I have quite a few friends who own IS here in Spain and they are pretty happy with them. Just stop by the equivalent forun in Spanish clublexus.eu and you can check our opinions about the car. If you think it fits for you, go for it!
Cheers
Jose

Hiya , thanks for the reply. Thats really bad news. 2 hybrid batterys replaced already ? Any reason they failed and do u know how much they are to replace ?? Id imagine thousands which is my fear. Im getting away from diesel cars due to dfp issues so the last thing i want is to be handing out allot of money replacing hybrid batteries . Thanks

Smile Good luck Byrnew with your IS300h hunt

Hi again, I saw your post on our Spain forum. Not many owners are willing to reply to your reply in English because they do not feel that confident writing in English. Anyway, they are nice cars and most of the members who own them, are happy and we did not have any major problem. Over there, like one member said, we have a extended warranty cover after the 5 years, so in case I need it, I purchased it. Just ask there because I am sure they might have something similar. I think Toyota offers something similar to this in the prius sold in the US. I just do not understand why Lexus do not sell the IS300h there, I would be a great car with good gas mileage and quiet running. In Spain we do not have the IS200t which would be a nice car for those who want more excitement. I asked my dealer and they told me that it was due to emission policies. Anyway. It will take you time but you definetely will get one. If not you can always ask your dealer to import one for you and I think they would do it.
Good luck!

Hello, thank you very much for the reply. The general response is there a reliable car. Ive only had 1 bad one and with that having 2 hybrid batteries changed there must have been a serious problem sonewhere with the hybrid system and not just general wear and tear. Thanks again mate.

I am on my second hybrid battery so I have only replaced it once, not twice, at around 90,000km. I don’t know why it failed. The check hybrid system light came on and the car defaulted to petrol only driving. The dealer reset the system so that I could continue to drive but they also suggested I change the hybrid battery, which on my car is covered by a 10year warrenty. The battery arrived a month later and I noticed an immediate improvement both in performance and economy.

The IS 300h is a comfortable car to drive, and it actually handles quite well. But it’s sold as an alternative sports saloon to the German rivals which it isn’t, mostly because the hybrid system is still using very dated Prius technology (which works well for its intended purpose on a Prius) and actually offers poor performance compared to the modern hybrids, or even compared with the 2018 Camry.

Another point that is worth noting..I found out even when the hybrid battery is new that..it’s possible, say during a long hill climb to run out of hybrid battery charge but it won’t be able to recharge sufficiently quickly to supply additional thrust, leaving you with only petrol engine power dragging a very heavy vehicle uphill.

For these reasons, plus a rumour (I cannot recall or substantiate its source) that the IS 300h does not meet the more stringent US crash safety tests, could perhaps be the reasons why it’s not sold in the USA. Looking at the latest Camry hybrid I would say that’s a better bet than the IS 300h, and it is quite a bit faster too.

The IS300h is more refined than the recent 4 cylinder petrol BMW 3 series I have driven, but not by a big margin, and in fact when accelerating the Lexus is disappointingly noisy because of the high engine rpms. It also emits more tire noise than the 3 series.

Hiya, thanks very much for your reply and information it was very interesting to read. I am a little bit afraid to change to a hybrid because it seems more to go wrong with parts in the car and more expensive parts at that. So if the battery needs changing can the car still drive ok by just using the petrol engine ?? Any idea of the cost of a battery like are we talking huge money .

thanks
