2017 Lexus IS Series vs. BMW 3 Series on Safety
In recent Insurance Institute For Highway Safety (IIHS) testing, the Lexus IS Series has distinguished itself in the compact sports sedan market with top safety scores. The Lexus IS and BMW 3 Series compete head to head in their entry-sports sedan marketplace, and both have good safety scores. However, dig into the IIHS reports and one will find that the Lexus IS has the edge in safety.
In a recent test of the Lexus IS the sedan scored "Superior" in forward crash prevention. This beats the BMW 3 Series's score of "Advanced." The Lexus scored twice as many points in this important test than did the BMW. Also, every Lexus IS comes with this important active safety system. On the BMW 3 Series, the less effective safety system is optional.
There are also differences in the headlight scores of the two vehicles. Although the BMW 3 Series and Lexus IS Series both score "Acceptable," the system that earns that score is standard on the Lexus. BMW shoppers will have to buy a "lighting package" to find those headlights. All the other BMW 3 Series headlights are rated "Poor" by IIHS.

Why was the 3IS not tested when the car was released in 2013? Especially when the 2IS did so poorly? If it’s taken till the 2018 model to get this score, then I worry for the safety protection of the 2013/14 3IS models.

Pole Position
From what I read, they did test it. But because of many features being standard such as the led headlights, radar cruise, pcs, etc, on the 2017, along with apparently other improvements, it was able to earn a better score than pre facelift.

i think the 3IS frame/body-wise is the same from 14-current. I would expect the actual crash test results to be same across all 3rd gen IS.

Lead Lap
Is it wrong to state that the absence of working turn signals on a 3 series is probably a big minus when it comes to safety? I see the lenses and lights are placed properly. I've still never seen one actually used.
