Default Gas + Brake used together?

Hi All,

Still learning about the 3IS. One thing I noticed is that the car will not allow both the gas and brake pedal to be used together. Is this normal? I am guessing that this is due "unintended acceleration" issues previously with the Prius.

I am used to left foot braking and do use both pedals when starting off from a stand still and sometimes also during hard cornering. Also in case you are wondering, no I do not brake torque

Yes, this is normal in both Toyota/Lexus vehicles since they implemented this safety feature. The moment you do this, the engine will go to idle.

That's odd. I've never had a problem with this when I launched my car.

You have to be going above 30 mph for it to work if I remember correctly.

Thanks for confirmation that this is normal!

Will have to try going faster than 30 mph and see if the gas cut off still happens.

I can't imagine using both feet in an automatic.

If for whatever reason you were trying to launch your car, you would be using both

This, if you want the best launch in an automatic, you keep your foot hard on the brake, bring the revs up a bit, then release the brake while rolling onto the throttle(you can mat the throttle in lower hp cars, but in higher hp cars it will break the tires loose, thus why I say roll onto the throttle smoothly).

I've heard of people using the left foot to brake like when driving on mountain roads or in high performance driving events on a track, I get it, you get maybe a slightly faster reaction time. Its just I'm so ingrained to driving a manual trans, left foot is clutch, right foot is brake and gas, I'd probably goof up left foot braking with an automatic.

It's my understanding that this was done as part of a recall that Toyota released and not all cars may have received; which could be why you don't have the "problem". Based on what I heard, the way to tell if your car had been updated is by looking at the shape of your gas pedal; apparently they changed it as part of the recall. Can you post a pic of yours? I'd be curious to see myself if there is any truth to what I heard.

If the throttle is pressed first and then the brake it drops to idle,
If the Brake is pressed first and then the throttle it will brake torque as before.
