Official 3rd Gen IS Tint Thread - add your pics here!

3IS Members,

This thread is a single point of reference for all the tint questions that will come. If you've had your 3IS tinted, please attach or upload pictures to the Club Lexus gallery and link them in this thread (Click here to get to the gallery upload and Method B in this link will tell you how to add pictures if you don't know how).

Please list:
- % tint
- color of your interior (does make a big difference in how dark tint appears)
- type of tint if you know it (smoke, dyed, metalized, etc)
- brand of tint if you know it (3M, Solarguard, Lumaster, etc)

There are a number of good "I got tint" threads, but I'd like to make one master thread with pictures of each percentage and pictures of different color 3IS/different interiors with tint to answer questions about what tint to get. Tint questions will often be merged into this thread.

Laws for tint in your state:
I can't vouch that all of these are correct, but Tintdude has a good summary of the max allowed in each state Link here

I would go with 15% all around . Protects your interior a bit from the sun and keeps the car little cooler .

Glashub 07-08-13 07:11 AM

I don't think 15% is legal in CA -- not that I ever see anyone pulled over with dark tints.

Uh oh, not another what's legal/illegal tint thread. I'll say it right now - CA law is you can get any level tint on the 2 backs and rear window but nothing on the 2 fronts. How many people obey that law though? It's your call if you want to risk it.

I'd get a gradient - like 15% on the rear, 25% on the 2 backs, and maybe 50% on the fronts. Or 18 on the rear, 35 on the back, and nothing in the front. You get the idea.

Glashub 07-08-13 07:53 AM

You're right about the rears etc.

mmims2000 07-08-13 08:35 AM

I'm going with 20% on the rear and backs, and 35% on the fronts. I've done this set-up before on two previous cars, and I think it always looks great. I live in Cali, and would be hesitant to go any darker on the front windows. My 3IS is obsidian/rioja red.. I will post pics next week after the tint is installed :-)

LEXUS1904 07-08-13 11:46 AM

No tint is the best way to go lol, clear, see through. So people out there can see who's driving the car, you know what I'm saying?

lysis250 07-08-13 12:54 PM

I have an Obsidian IS250 and I have 5% in the rear 3 windows and 15% in the front 2. I've had it for almost half a year now and I never had a run in with the law. On top of all that it looks awesome.

John510 07-08-13 02:34 PM

Mine is in the shop now getting 18 percent rear 35 percent front.

I like the 15% all-around on the Obsidian - it gives off a truly sinister look.

I am wondering though if it would be just as nice seeing the Rioja Red interior contrasting against the black exterior if a lighter 35 - 50% tint was used instead.

JerryWest 08-06-13 09:35 PM

Does anyone know what the factory tint % is on the 2014 IS250/350 ?

John510 08-06-13 10:00 PM

I did 18 percent rear and I wish I would have done 35. The windows are already tinted around 95 percent so the 18 looks like limo tint.

Even with the 35 percent in the front you can not tell the car has red interior.

JerryWest 08-06-13 10:34 PM

The factory tint has to be darker than 95% - my first Gen IS300 had a lighter tint than my 2014 IS -- I'm guessing 80% for the 2014 IS models

Well, you could go 80% or 90% and no one would notice. Lol!!

I have 35% all around, well mostly.

How much does tint cost in general through the dealer, if you don't mind me asking?

Depends on the dealer. Mine wanted 450 just for the rears. All the dealer is going to do is subcontract it out to a tint guy so you might as well go straight to the tint guy yourself and save money. Besides the dealers will not tint the front windows if it is illegal in your state.

No wonder why my 35% looks really dark(like 18%). The windows are already at 78/70.

Where did you find this info? I probably won't tint if its already that much from factory.

kimber13 08-07-13 11:43 AM

I went with 25% all around and I love the look. It's nice and dark but doesn't draw too much unwanted attention. The owner of the tint shop I went to tried to steer me away from my original request for 20%, I'm glad I listened as I am very pleased with the result.

I did 18% carbon tint all around a little more than regular tint but last longer and is three times as thick as regular tint heres a pic its with an iphone 5 camera. BTW at night time and even in day they are dark really dark becuase of the dark red and black interior......

John510 08-07-13 03:30 PM

18% looks like limo tint.

Tints are not additive by multiplicative -- hence if you use a 35% Tint over a 70% tint = .35 X .70 = .25 or 25% equivalent tint overall.

If you wanted a 35% overall you would've have needed to add 50% over the 70% tint.

JerryWest 08-08-13 09:44 PM

Below is the stock glass for the 2nd gen IS250/350. Does anyone have access to the 3rd gen IS250/350 glass specs? I'm assuming it's the same w/ 70% tint --

Jlesz 08-09-13 01:46 AM

i got 15% on the front windows and sunroof and 5% on all the back windows aswell as a 5% strip on the front windshield.

My dealer wanted $400 plus tax but would not go below 35%.

I have a good contact for tint's and got an amazing price for tints plus a clear bra on the front end. Got everything done for $475 cash

enoren 08-09-13 07:18 AM

I paid $260 at a private shop for 3M 20% tint on the back and side windows.

That's what I have on mine. The only time I had an issue with the law is when I was at the airport picking someone up. Cop said "do you want to tear the tints off now or should I write you a ticket" I asked for the ticket, but he lightened up and let the matter slide.

TooFly4Ya 08-09-13 12:04 PM

15% all around looks the best on white or black cars.

Jimt9 08-09-13 02:43 PM

My dealer had a special and the tint is going to be no charge (my car is coming in next week). They said they normally do15%. Judging by the pictures above 15% will be pretty dark? Am I wrong? I've never had my windows tinted before and have no experience with this. I want them dark but not so dark they look almost solid black. My car is atomic silver should I not go with maybe 25%? If I understand correctly the larger the number the more light the tint will allow through, correct?

18% is what i have on mine and they are really dark ...so 15 would be a little darker it is hard at night for me to properly park my car close to a curb etc with tints i have to roll my windows down and mine are again only 18% carbon tint

Alant514 08-09-13 08:45 PM

I have my tint as 5% back, 25% rear door, and 35% front. Looks good

Here is a pic. Suntek carbon 18% rear and back, 35% front. That car has red interior but you can't tell from looking in.

If I was going to do it again I would do 35 percent all around.

Old pic, but 35% 3M all around. Obsidian exterior/black interior. Looks lighter in the picture than in person. Might be the angle in which I took the pic :p

Yep that's right. Most cars these days already have factory tint, so when you put a tint, you need to take this into account.

Did you tint your front windshield? That is 78%, while the sides are 70%.

Your 35% on top of either of those windows would be 27.3% or 24.5%, and take into account a ± 5 tolerance on the read out.

I got this info from form member Jeff Lange, since he works for Toyota Parts and can access this info.

Looks awesome! Love the tint on the nebula grey.

This is my car with 35% mostly all around on a very sunny day.

It must depend on the brand of tint because some of these 35% look way lighter than my 35%.
