Are you all happy with your Lexus dashcams? I'm trying to figure out if I should to OEM or aftermarket. I know there's a wiring harness for aftermarket ones... but I'm more curious about functionality / ease of use
If you're looking at a car with one already installed, it's a drop in the bucket. May as well try it out. If not, I'd say it's probably best to shop around. I like the way the Lexus dashcam seamlessly blends into the interior, but otherwise, it's nothing too special.
When it comes to ease of use; what are you looking for? I think aftermarket (for the most part) will give you better images/quality.
I don't have OEM. I have aftermarket. I used the Amazon wiring harness. I put it in the little notch to the right of the mirror mount cover and tucked all the wires in the headliner. In my .02 it looks good. I have installed it on a Rav and a Equinox. Those two owners are as happy as I am with it.
Here's what the Lexus Integrated Dash Cam looks like. To my eye, the type of material and feel of the buttons is very similar to everything else in the interior, which is the best thing about it.
I put an aftermarket FitCamX on my IS. For the price (150 on sale) it does a decent job. Took 10 minutes to install because I did not opt for the rear cam or the parking sensor which would require running wires. My main complaint is that it records in five-minute increments. If you take a 20 minute drive, you have 4 different mp4 files of the drive. At the 4K resolution a five-minute recording is roughly 885MB, so you get just over 6 hours of recording on a 64GB card. The lights indicating that it is recording are nearly impossible to see in daylight but I have it set to auto record when the car starts. One button on the cam can also takes photos. The App to control it and the settings is decent, but nothing special and requires your phone to connect to the camera via the camera's ad hoc wireless network. Not bluetooth, actual wireless.
