Default Midpipe Questions

I see a lot of info regarding midpipes and wanted to clarify.

I noticed the factory midpipe has two cans mid way and a bigger one at the end. I assume the two cans are 2nd cats and the bigger one is a resonator?? When I had my car smogged this week they looked under the car, so I figure they were looking at the midpipe.

I see different brands--Invidia, Megan, OBX etc. I wonder if an aftermarket midpipe will actually give better flow. I dont want a lot of extra noise. Its pretty quiet now with the Tanabe axle back.

If you've got a RWD, then Megan racing midpipe is your best choice (imo). I'm running a Tanabe axle back with a Megan racing midpipe. Sounds a tad bit more profound (boosts the Tanabe sound). Good combo, if avoiding a raspy sound.

Agreed , Megan would be the best choice. Albeit more expensive vs the others. And possibly out of stock everywhere.

Reach out to Megan racing via contact #. And find out when the next batch will be made available. And keep reaching out closer to the date. That's what I kept doing and managed to score one on their most recent batch (i believe July it was). Do not rely on their website to tell you whether its in stock or not. I had to order it over the phone because the website wasn't advertising it. I asked but they didn't know why themselves. Don't give up.

No CEL issue. As far as performance goes, i would say it's less restriction, hence a slight better performance, but I wouldn't say any HP gains (that i know of atleast). I'm no expert. PPE headers do help (10-16whp if I'm not mistaken). However the Megan racing midpipe is a great combination with the PPE headers cause it helps tame the rasp that the headers cause.

Default resonator

As to not start a new thread...

When you replace the resonator for a hi-flow or test pipe, do you keep the stock one?

If you mean in the back of the shop for the critters to move in, I'd say that's optional. IMO the resonator is not a restriction and is well engineered. So it depends what your overall expectations are with the next step.

Default hi-flo resonator

Vehicle already has a Yonaka axleback system.

Almost the same as Tanabe, AKA Revel.

After the exhaust install still noticed too quiet, went online and watched numerous videos, resonator delete / test pipe, Vibrant, Magnaflow, etc.
Stumbled on a is video with a Aero turbine, so followed with resonator searches for that brand.

Ended buying Aero TR253, for $63.00 shipped Fedex (3-days).

Aero TR253 Decided with this resonator, liked the welds fit finish and internal grid baffle of very good quality.

I should have taken a pic side by side when consulting with welder how I wanted the setup, but he was in a hurry, that shop is always packed. Got there at 8:45am, got out at 2pm. $85 cash, cut and weld.
There is a noticeable difference, stock resonaor is about 2" ID while the Aero is true 2.5" ID.

It did what I wanted, woke up the axleback. My car, even with the RR-Racing tune cannot rev limit in neutral or two step whatever it is called, so I cannot do rev limit clips.

Some may say it gives no gains, but I do notice the car with more torque all across the power band and more aggressive on the top end. May be a butt-dyno, others who have been in the car have said the same. Spirited driving sounds grumpy with a low rumble when letting go off the gas and picking up again.
*still have all four cats, primary, secondary, stock midpipe besides replacing the resonator. Has RR-Racing tune, pending delivery of PPE Headers.

Before during spirited driving most of the noise came from the engine bay, now is more balanced all around the cabin and the rear of the car.

How is the RR Racing tune?? Easy to program?? How is the engine after the tune? Im thinking about getting it but Im in CA where now they check for ECU tunes during smog check
