Good morning all, I have just picked an immaculate 06 is250 58k miles with worn 225/45/17 tyres I've ordered replacement 225/50/17 tyres as the old ones are noisy and I'm told that increasing the sidewall size softens the ride and is quieter. Has anybody else done this.

Good find! I haven't seen an IS250 with those low miles, if you are talking about Kilometers, that's a really good find. Personally I would stick with the stock tire size for the rims you have. I'm sure it would work, but others who have done it will know better. I can tell you that a friend of mine who has a Civic Type R actually downsized his tires from the stock 20" to 18" which brought down the road noise significantly

Did a tire retailer really advise that a 225/50-17 tire would be an acceptable replacement for the 225/45-17 stock size? The rule of thumb I've always heard is that you want to stay within 3 percent of stock tire diameter. If you wanted a 50 series AR, I'd have thought a 215/50-17 would have been their recommendation?

Yes it's been done with no issues, you will notice a better quieter and more comfortable ride than the stock tires
I currently run 235/50 R17 on my 07 2IS with no issues.
There was initially some slight rubbing at fill turn but I fixed that by treating the fender lining with heat. Car rides well with no issues and it's great.
Note though that your speedo is gonna be slightly "off" with its speed, usually running sightly higher than indicated.
That's not mine, although having changed the tyres and taken it out for a bit of a spin I can announce I'm very pleased with the results, checked speedo against a Garmin sat nav and it's all good up to 60 mph at 70 its +2 mph at 80 its +3 mph I can live with that. Thanks for the replies.
