Default Winter tires

Hi guys,

I have a question. For my IS 250, I have tires 225-45-17. It's very low profile...I used to have a subaru forester for 6 years, and my first winter with the lexus is still unknown. Do I have a possibility of putting a tire that is bigger so it's less low profile. Should I put a smaller rim? What are the possibilities?
And do you guys have good recommandations for tires and good prices (around Mirabel)
Thanks for your input

I would assume quality snow tires can be found in you 225/45/17 size there. Why the want/need to get a different tire size?

Smallest tire you can use is 16" if you really want more sidewall, but you'll have to buy a set of 16" rims for that. You can't really stray much from the current amount of sidewall on the 17" tire. If you don't want to buy 16's, the suggested tire size above for the 17 is more than fine with a good set of winter tires.

edit: for those of you with 350's, a 16 rim will not clear the front calipers.

If you want more sidewall you could possibly go with 225 50 17 or 245 45 17. I run Blizzak 215 50 17 in the winter..

to GVILLE: I want a smaller rim to have a chance to have a bigger tire ( the edge it's called, I guess), so it's less "knocking" when you hit holes, that is the whole idea.

to Primavera: good to know, and it did not change anything for the odometer? I heard it was good for the electronics. That was my fear.

The change in speedometer is so minuscule you would never notice any difference. We have terrible roads in town so I run slightly taller sizes: 245 40 18 in the summer and 215 50 17 in the winter. Never had problems with electronics.

For winter tires I always go one size smaller. For the IS250 I have 205/55/16 winter tires. The advantage is that a narrower tire (205 instead of 225 width) will be better in deep snow. A wider tire will tend to sit more on top and not dig into the snow as well. A higher sidewall (55 instead of 45) also allows a bit for flex in the tire and also helps with tire traction. 205/55/16 is virtually identical in circumference as the 225/45/17 so there is no impact on odometer.

I do samething as Newgsman. I'm running on 16" on my IS AWD and it's better than the low profile 17s for winter.
Also I drove a WRX for 12 years on Blizzaks and they were amazing. But the Hankook I-Pike that came with my IS are as good as the Blizzaks were for my Subaru.
The IS is a very stable car in bad snowy road (like my WRX was) I just miss the LSD for drifting...
