Overfilled oil due to emergency
Hi All,
First time posting. I have an '06 IS350. I ran into an issue last night where I was driving home on the freeway and the 'low engine oil' light flashed. At first, it went away but came back 5 minutes later. Knowing the damage this could potentially cause I took the next exit and went to the nearest gas station I could find to take a look. I checked the dipstick but it showed there was almost no oil left.
In my panic, I bought more oil and added it to get me home, but in my stupidity filled it with a full 6 quarts (based on engine capacity). I also added 10W-30 instead of the recommended 5W-30 since 5W-30 wasn't available there. The car ran and sounded normal all the way home, but I know I have to do something to make sure the car doesn't get damaged. I figured my options were the following:
1. Siphon out the extra oil till I get to the right amount and done.
or
2. Do a full oil change (I'd rather not do since I already paid $70 for the 6 quarts last night).
Any recommendations?
Thanks

Do a complete oil change as soon as you can. Using the 10w-30 wont hurt anything, but adding an extra 6 quarts(!) is much too much. Yeah it will suck since you just spent 70 on new oil, but much better than having a big, costly repair because of it. Better safe than sorry.
And for next time - I believe the "Oil Low"" message is triggered when you are one quart low. I always keep a quart bottle or two in the trunk just incase.

I can't see anything wrong with letting it sit over night and sucking out the extra with a vac pump.
Oil has an anti aeration property in it so overnight it will settle.
In the future check all fluid and tyres weekly when cold.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I haven't started the car up since the incident, but I have checked the oil since. No signs of aeration from the dipstick, but it is about 2 inches above the "full" hole. I'll be doing the full change on Saturday morning (ordered OEM filters from Amazon), and plan on having it inspected for leaks and possible damage. Will let you guys know what happens.
Thanks!
Thanks!

2 inches above full mark??!! Yikes! Yeah that is definitely too much oil. EZLex brought up a good point about the low engine oil light that it triggers if one less court of oil is in the engine. I had an incident when I had my oil changed at the Toyota dealership a while back.. I got the low engine oil light that came on and off. After adding a quart of oil the oil level on the dipstick showed full... I am assuming that Toyota dealership put 1 less quart oil in my car by mistake... I didn't have low engine oil issue in the past.

The 2GR-FSE has a windage tray crank scraper which separates the oil shed by the reciprocating crank / rod journals from the standing oil in the sump (well sort of). Its job is to direct the oil thrown from the crank directly into the sump to reduce oil vapor of it splashing into the sump directly.
The problem arises when the oil is so full the crank is bathed in it and literally foams from spinning in an oil bath and pressurize's the crankcase to level that the PVC system can not vent it. i.e. positive pressure is made internal to the crankcase and valve covers... It is positive pressure that blows out seals, creates leaks at joined sealing surfaces and generally forces oil and vapor out anywhere it can to relieve pressure. That is how an overfill incident makes a good engine into a seeper/leaker.
One tell tale sign is you get home and find the dipstick tube pushed out and oil running down that tube.
If you have to drive it, lower the level first.

Everyone has been awesome. Thank you!
So I was able to do the whole oil change yesterday using full synthetic 5w-30 and an oem toyota/lexus filter. Filled with 6.5qts, checked the level on the dipstick and added the remaining .2 it needed. It came right to the top of the stick. Drove it around for a bit and she drove perfect. Let the car sit overnight and today, checked for leaks, took it for a hard 15 minute drive and everything looks perfect so far. Thanks everyone.
