Default Alternator and Speedo Needle Going Out

This morning I smelled a faint burning smell under the hood. Took it to a tech who advised the alternator is going out--probably shorting out and may cause fire. Its still running for now with no CEL or battery warning light. New alternator installed will be about $400.

Also, the speedo needle is going out--sections of the needle are going dim--cant really see it in the pic. Its a minor issue though.

Get the alternator replaced STAT! I've read it can cause fire and it will most likely take your battery and bus fuses with it when it goes.

Alternator set me back about 300$ not worth setting your engine bay on fire, go get it done. As far as the needle, that's common its just some LED's and I see your over 150k so its nothing out of the ordinary, my needles been out for a while.

Great. At least you avoided the usual meltdown. Now as whitebeast said above, PM him. He repairs these cluster LED's and such when they fail, iirc. He can give you all sorts of different colors from stock too.

Check a wrecking yard for an alternator. I saw one out of 2013 with like 9000 miles on it for $75 in CA via Car-parts.com (Crystal Auto Wrecking Sun Valley).
