I'm looking to buy another car sometime before the end of summer and by the looks of it, I might have to travel a few hundred miles to find the right car I want in my price range. One of my options is the BMW 335xi with the N54 engine. I plan to drive the IS to get it and have a buddy drive the 335xi back but I've heard too many stories about the high pressure fuel pump going out on those things and people get stranded when it breaks down. I would have it transported back but I know I'm going to cheap out trying to save $1K. Let's say but hope not, something goes bad on the 335 while driving it back. Can I just tow/pull it with the IS350 just to get it back home?

 

Wait a second, you are seriously considering purchasing a car that you have so little faith in, you think it might not even make the trip back home?

Why on Earth would you even remotely want to purchase a vehicle that you think could possibly break down on the way home?

If your opinion of the 335i is that low, do yourself a favor and get an M3. It's better in every way possible. Performance, looks, reliability, resale value etc...

What year 335? The HPFP issues were mainly with the 07 and 08s. BMW supposedly redesigned it for the 09 model year. Some cars were even recalled by BMW so there's a chance it's already been replaced on that car. Plus, there is a warranty extension on the FP for 10 yrs/100K miles, I believe. Just drive it back, it's not gonna grenade on you. And, in the off chance that it does, you'll be covered (unless it has over 100K miles).

 

Can it tow something...well sure; it's got more torque than some pick-ups on the road today. But is it supposed to, no.

Well, I can't consider the M3. I'm considering a 335xi cause of AWD and performance. My IS350 is RWD and it's manageable in the snow with snow tires but still a headache. I'll be leaving to school at 6:15 AM and in the winter, the streets aren't plowed at that time. The 335xi with a JB4 tune and bolt-ons is faster than the M3 anyways. I basically need a new daily car. It will also be parked on the streets so I don't want something that nice like an M3.

I'm trying to decide between a G37x coupe or 335xi coupe. Too many people claim BMW's especially the 07-08 335's are unreliable. I don't know if that is true or not until I own one. If I do run into problems, it's probably on the way back. Once I do have it at home, I'll be doing a tune-up and everything on it. Just don't know if the car will have any problems that the dealer may not tell me or something an inspection might miss and I drive off and run into problems on the way back, that's what I'm really worried about.

 

How far of a drive you have to go? Honestly I wouldn't worry about it. Chances of are very slim I say.

I think that an all wheel drive Lexus IS350 would be a better daily driver than a 335i. There have been a ton of stories about the early 335's being extremely unreliable. Possibly the least reliable car BMW has ever made. If it has had all the recalls done that might be a different story though. I personally wouldn't touch the 335i with a 10 foot pole. The M3 seems better in every way possible to me, also as a DD. Even edmunds.com estimates the 5 year running cost of the 335i to be higher than an M3. That should tell you something.

 

Lol, there is no way I'll get another IS350. I don't want two of them even though they're great cars. I have considered a GS350 AWD of the same year as my IS. However, I still want a car that can be tuned/modded. That's why I come down to the 07-08 335xi or 09-10 G37x. I also want a coupe.

Looking to travel 1000 miles at most but hopefully when I have the money ready to buy, one shows up locally or under 200 miles.
