I got a ding on the windshield about 2 years ago and now it develops into a crack line about 6 inch long...

Any recommendation on how to fix or replace it? I'd like to get some ideas before getting it fix.

for future reference, your insurance usually covers dings at no cost to you whatsoever (b/c they do not want to have to cover the cost of a replacement windshield down the road) so it's best to get dings filled before they have a chance to spread.

Now you're looking at close to $1000 for a genuine Lexus windshield or dealing with an inferior quality product. There are threads on here that talk about wind noise, problems with rain sensing wipers etc if you do not get OEM replacement. There is also the issue of your insurance covering OEM or you being able to pay the difference to get it. IMO, it's best to go OEM.

Magnussen's Lexus of Fremont will do it for me for $1,500.
I pay $500 deductible I think and Geico will cover the rest ...

FYI: You should have fix with the liquid glue when it just a ding. Not sure what the liquid glue call but this thing glue the ding without notice the glass bean damage and also you don't have to worry it crack like what you facing now. Do search around you should able to find out this liquid glue.

Call up your insurance and you tell them to add glass insurance so when your glass crack you pay $65 deductable and they replace it. It's just an option like having rental car or towing added to your insurance

 

I ended up paying most of the cost for replacement. Geico only paid me $166 for the total cost of $1,440 from Lexus dealer. They argued that:
- I should get it replaced at some glass shop for about $666 and then $500 deductible kicked in.
- It was my mistake to bring it to the dealer for glass replacement because Geico don't justify the the amount Lexus dealer of Fremont (CA) charge in the bill.

For me, I should have called them to find out instead of relying on their Geico website and trusted them to go ahead with the work being done at my choice.

For me, I picked the originating dealer because I trust their work and for my own safety and peace of mind.

I am wrong. Geico just don't care about all that. It makes me wonder that if Geico is the right insurance company for me.

 

Travelers did it OEM for me, no problem...in case you're looking. The insurance laws in Florida are a little different, but they were still great to deal with through the whole thing.

 

FWIW, I know that many CL members hate SafeLite, but I just had my windshield replaced with SafeLite for under $500. They came to my office, were done in less than 2 hours. No complaints. The first day, the rain sensing wipers kept going off by themselves, but have been fine ever since. But--we haven't had any rain in the past 2 weeks to test out how the wipers are working during a rain storm.

My deductible was $250.

 

Wow. Was your car parked outside most of the time? I have a big chip on my windshield for.... almost 8 years and still a chip. Hopefully it doesn't expand as i do park 90% indoor.

 

I'm sure if you have any issue it'll be easier to bring to the dealer right away and possible get a loaner car. So how long did the dealer take to replace and did they give you a loaner at first?

 

It's the road you drive on the more uneven the road the more stress its going to be on the glass

 

Cracks / dings in the windshield that are over the size of 1 square inch (a quarter) cannot be safely repaired. Most places will not let you repair cracks/chips that are over the 1 inch, because they will end up spreading again.

Also the location of chip is important. In CA, they cannot legally repair a rock chip that happens on the driver side since this is a distraction.

Even if you repair the chip, you will still see the line in the glass if you look closely. Repairing it simply prevents it from spreading into a crack.

When you get a rock chip, it's best to fix it right away while you can. Avoid using heater or prevent sudden change in temperature which will spread the crack faster. Insurance will cover the repair as others said. I fixed my rock chip twice through my insurance. Your rates won't go up because of this.

On my old car, I learned the hard way after replacing my windshield once because I let the rock chip spread into a 6 inch crack.
