Default Retail Value

Hello All,

It has been sometime since I have posted....

What are everyones thoughts on the retail value of a 2010 IS350. Now, mind you I got this car in July of 09. it has 31k miles on it and is loaded with exhaust, lowering, intake and nav and etc....

Will the new IS lower the value by thousands? I know it is still worth a pretty penny, but that is what scares me. I see them going for 36-40K. I recently purchased the car and the state/insurance put the value at close to 42k

Thanks so much.

First of all, a newer version of a car will almost always make the older version decrease in value (assuming the newer version is successful). As for "value", use KBB or a similar site to determine the value of your car, in it's condition in your market. And as for any mods such as exhaust, lowering or an aftermarket intake, keep in mind that many of us on CL enjoy modding our cars but that the majority of the population isn't interested in changing the car from it's factory state. If you mod and look to resell, you are hoping to find a buyer that either wants the mods that you've done or at the very least doesn't mind that you've done them. 95 out of 100 people that I encounter driving an IS are rolling in a bone stock car. Perhaps not as extreme as trying to sell a house with a swimming pool in the backyard, but similar for sure.....

You are best off getting an accurate price through online websites. Kelly Blue Book, Edmunds, Autotrader, and others all have easy ways to punch in your car, location, and get a value.
But deduct some $ for the mods. Most people look at that as a negative, as modded cars are often connected to aggressive driving, racing/tracking, shady installations, and possible mechanical headaches to deal with.

I agree with what Fizzboy7 said. It would be in your best interest to sell off the mods and return the car to stock before selling if you are looking to optimize the value.

I've given this a lot of thought, as it was one of the reasons for my putting my car up for sale.

In my opinion, the next-gen IS will certainly lower the value of all 2IS's, but I don't think the effect will be that drastic in the first couple of years since the market for a brand new 3IS and a used 2IS are pretty different. Once the 3IS gets into its 2nd or 3rd MY, I think the effect on 2IS pricing will be exacerbated as the choice between a $40k used 3IS and a $30k-$35k used 2IS starts to succumb to pricing pressure.

Just my anecdotal thoughts.

Just saw a 2011 with 15k miles, fully loaded selling for $34,889 at a dealer. Don't really know where the 42k value you got was from. But yes, the 3IS will cause a drop in the price of the older generation, but I wouldn't think by that much.

Every few years, there's going to be a new facelift or new model that lowers the value a little more. It's hard to live by this constant decline and sell off at an optimum time. I'd say for those who have their car paid off, it may make a little difference. But for those who are still paying off a contract, you are best paying it off completely and then selling.
