I still stand by Lexus though. I mean just look at the response from Toyota after these tests. Check out both Mercedes and Toyota's reply as below. We should all in essence be proud of our manufacturer. Simply awesome
"Mercedes said it didn't agree with its ranking and pointed out that the C-Class is listed as one of the institute's top safety picks. Mercedes said the crash test mimics an unusually severe and uncommon scenario.
"As a leader in automotive safety, we have full confidence in the protection that the C-Class affords its occupants—and less confidence in any test that doesn't reflect that," Mercedes said in a statement.
Toyota Motor Co, which owns the Lexus brand, accepted the results.
"With this new test, the institute has raised the bar again and we will respond to this challenge as we design new vehicles," Toyota said.
But Toyota also noted that it has more top safety picks—17—than any other auto maker."

Sure that test looked bad for the IS, but I remember reading a thread here about an 18 year old with an IS350 that sped around a curve or turn, lost control, flipped or rotated the car, and came out with scratches and being thankful for being ok and alive. That kind of sealed the deal, for me, that the IS is a very safe car.

IIRC, when I bought my 07, the IS had some very good crash test ratings. So is this the only test that it fails now? While these results are a bit disappointing, it seems like some people in this thread are really overreacting... This is still a pretty safe car. I mean almost NONE of the cars they tested did well.
Audi and Mercedes were both labeled "poor", just like the tested Lexus vehicles... BMW was only a bit better, apparently. (Granted, I have not seen the video yet.

I still don't think anyone actually looked at the report... in 2IS, people would definitely survive that with lower limb issues, if anything at all...
I'd like to see how cars fare against a telephone pole sideways into the drivers door at 40 mph... I'd put money that not a single car on the road would fare well with that, but, just like this test, it would account for some accidents that actually do occur...

Chill out Guy's. Lexus will fix this issue by their next car which definitely is the 3rd Gen IS. Too bad Lexus released all the other's ( ES , GS and LS ) too soon.
I believe they have enough time to look into and fix the 3rd Gen IS to pass this safety test.

I would have thought this was sponsored by Volvo.
To be honest, when we shopped for Volvo we did consider that "nowadays most cars are equally safe", not just Volvo, but when checking out the specs and actual car, the smaller Volvo hatch back is smaller than the IS but the curb weight was about the same, considering the engine has 1 less cyinder and aluminum block so the weight is not in the engine, the Volvo does seem to have thicker steel all over, some in the form of reinforcement beam in the doors.
That said, stop hitting the corner of a building, make sure you steer to find the biggest area to hit. Maybe next year IIHS will send car through a giant log cutting blade or drop it from the sky..
