Well because u never hit the pothhole hard hiii, i have 245-30-20 which cover my 8.5 width wheels, i hit pothhole several time never have a chip in the lip, but two weeks ago i hit this pothhole at speed 40 mph and my volk lip bend :-(( but no chip on the lip, the reason i want to say go wide is to protect the lip
Any wheel can bend hitting a pothole. Doesn't matter what width you have. I'd say the lower the profile the more risk of bending a wheel.
