Default Reattaching the mud flaps?

Hey all,

One of the mud flaps... I think that's what it is... fell off and is only hanging on on one end. I've been using tape for a few months now. I would like a more permanent fix.

Any idea where I can get the clips to resecure them?

Thanks!

I don't believe those are mud flaps (they're in front of the tire afterall). I remember being told that they had something to do with controlling turbulence around the rear wheels. One of mine fell off once while it was under warranty, and I had the dealer fix it. Then the other one started hanging off out of warranty, and the dealer wanted like $132 to fix it. I just said eff that. Didn't really look into how to fix it or how worthwhile it would be to do so.

It seems like this is a common problem, though. I'm a bit surprised there isn't a recall/TSIB on it. I wonder how important those things really are.

I'm on the same boat as you. One is just dangling, I'm think I'm just gonna just take it off.

Mine's hanging like that currently too for the 3rd time now. First time the dealer took care of it, second time i put a clip in it (i believe it was the exact same as the ones used to hold the engine covers down). This time my car is going in for service anyways so i'm just gonna have them do it like the first time

And $132 to fix that is ridiculous. It's not even essential.

Mine was hanging off two months ago and my dealership ordered a new one for me. Just found out several days ago that its hanging again, smh. Toyota needs to fix this design. I did recently have a GFX kit installed and that was when this issue started occurring - would be interested in seeing if this occurs only/mainly to peeps who run the GFX?

Had this happen to me on both 2IS's that I've had. It requires a simple DIY push-in clip that Sewell sells for dirt cheap. Here's the link:

Hope this helps!

I had the dealer fix mine once, then I reattached it using the clips sold by Sewell and then when it was dangling again I gave up and took it off.

Thanks for the feedback.

Is it really for aerodynamics? I'll just tape it up till my next service and see what they will do for me.

Yes, aerodynamics. But $5.00+ for a silly little plastic clip that should cost more like 10cents ?

more like to help against flinging rock chips.

save yourself time and trouble and just go get the two little clips from the dealer and be done with it

Yes, its for aerodynamic purposes. I believe its called a fairing/deflector. Air hitting the tire straight on creates alot of turbulence and is not good for high speed or fuel economy. The fairing redurects the air to go around the tire. for smoother airflow. It is used for racing and also for those fuel misers. How well it works on the IS, is debatable.

Here is a interesting article on under-car airflow.

I've had mine break several times too. I think the culprit is driving through a deep puddle or other standing water at high speed. The clip is strong enough to stand up against air pressure, but not water pressure.

No, the clips are significantly larger than the ones used to hold the engine covers on.
