Use the valet key to open the housing. Go to Radio Shack or Batteries Plus to buy a CR1632 battery. Cost of battery should be under $6.

You can get the batteries cheap from eBay too.
Here's a video on how to change it... can't get any easier

I would only buy 2 or 3. I bought a pack of 6 and after several years I'm on the last 2 or so and they seem to go out a lot faster now.

what's funny is for as many stories as I've seen from folks who got it done free by the dealer you see just as many report the dealer charged em some stupidly high amount for it (Like $30-60 bucks, for a $2 part that takes like 60 seconds to replace)

Technically speaking, I would recommend wearing an Electro Static Discharge (ESD) band. It is possible to zap the components on the circuit board. I don't wear one but I recommend you do. Do as I say not as I do!
