Default Question: AUX input?

One question.
I was wondering is there any way you can install a USB reader in place of the auxiliary input? Does the head unit need to have a USB reading capability?

I was just wondering cause Id rather use a flash drive and not worry about charging a my itouch all the time.

My car is a '09 NON ML.

I don't think a 3.5mm jack provides power. I believe it is just an input, not a power output which would facilitate the charging of an ipod/usb device.

This would be like plugging a hard drive with movies on it directly into a computer monitor and expecting the movies to play.

there has to be something in between to read, understand, and do something with the data.

2010 and newer 2ISes come with a head unit that includes and understands USB input. 06-09 models do not.

VAIS and others sell adapters to add this functionality, but it's not going to happen with a $5 cable/adapter.
