Default not using tpms??

whats the worst that can happen if i don't use tpms on my summer wheels? i really dont wanna spend $400 for sensors and to have the dealer program them. I know I will get a warning light saying the sensors are missing but I heard it can eventually lead to my check engine light coming on and traction control light to come on. Is this true?
