Hit a Pothole, have a ?
Guys, i hit a dam pothole last night on my right front rim. Got home and took the wheel off, the front was not bent at all but it does have a slight bend towards the outer lip on the back of the rim. When i was driving down the highway this am i could start to feel it vibrate and shake but the alignment is fine. Do you guys think my rim is trashed or maybe just my tire is bad now. I have bent rims worse than this and didnt get the vibration. Do i just mabye need to take the tire in and have it rebalanced. Any imput??? Thanks
It is out of balance, so you will need to straighten and rebalanced. Some times depending on the weight of the rim, where the original weight position, and the balance, just a rebalancing without straightening wouldnt fix it.
From your explanation your wheel took a nasty hit, enough to bend it. From my past experience on my old wheels once you have a bend that's an indication that the wheel in it's entirety is out of round. So balancing might help reduce the vibration, but your best bet is to replace it.
After you get the vibration resolved, it wouldn't hurt to have our wheel alignment checked. While it might seem ok, a pothole can put it car out of alignment. Same thing happend to me a couple of years ago. But I hit one on the expressway that resulted in a cracked rim with a slow leak. Had a nice bubble in the tire too. :-) Tis the season....
